Spirit Airlines ceased operations at 0300 today

Today, we say goodbye to Spirit Airlines, a carrier that shaped the low-cost era for 33 years and closed its final chapter with tail number NKS33. Its last flight carries more than a registration number; it marks the end of an airline that became part of the daily lives of crews, travelers, and aviation workers across the country.

At 3:00 a.m. Eastern on May 2, 2026, Spirit officially ceased operations, and employees were told the airline would permanently wind down and work to get crew members back to their home base. The shutdown leaves about 14,000 people facing an uncertain future, after years of financial strain and a failed rescue effort.

Could the merger between JetBlue and Spirit have saved this airline? We will never know, thanks to the judge who blocked the deal and left Spirit to face its own collapse. For the crews, dispatchers, mechanics, and gate agents who kept the airline moving, this is a painful ending that should have never arrived.
