Think you have to have a passport to take a cruise?

Not always.

Many closed-loop cruises that begin and end at the same U.S. port allow eligible U.S. citizens to travel with a certified birth certificate and a government-issued photo ID.

But here's the part most people don't know...

A passport can make things much easier if you miss the ship, have a medical emergency, or need to fly home unexpectedly.

That's why I almost always recommend getting one if you can.

The rules can vary based on the itinerary and cruise line, which is why I help my clients make sure they have the right documents before they sail.
