The State Bar of Texas Executive Committee met on January 8 in Austin. Here are a few highlights from the meeting.

➡️ President-elect G. David Smith reported for the Budget Committee, which met on December 16 to review the State Bar’s proposed budget for FY2026-2027. The Executive Committee voted to recommend that the State Bar Board of Directors approve the proposed budget for publication in the March issue of the Texas Bar Journal. The next Board of Directors meeting will be on January 30 in Fort Worth.

➡️ President Santos Vargas reported the State Bar’s next free CLE seminar for solo and small firm practitioners will take place from 2 to 4:30 p.m. January 29 in Fort Worth. Topics include a State Bar update; updates on family law, litigation, and employment law; and a Supreme Court of Texas update.

➡️ The Executive Committee voted to recommend approval of the Nominations & Elections Subcommittee’s recommended nominees for 2026-2027 State Bar president-elect candidacy, Sarah Clower Keathley (Corsicana) and Ray Thomas (McAllen). The Board of Directors will vote on their nominations on January 30.

➡️ Executive Director Trey Apffel reported the 2026 State Bar Annual Meeting will take place in Houston. The meeting is scheduled for June 11-12 at the Marriott Marquis.

➡️ Apffel also reported that the December issue of the Texas Bar Journal included a “By the Numbers” report reflecting results and outcomes of State Bar core services for the past bar year.

I met and in 2002 at Trinity. We’ve been friends ever since….more like family. came along later but was a perfect fit. Nearly 25 years of friendship and we’re all aging backwards. Bake would be here too but, he has a new bun so he gets a pass.
