Ever wonder why so many of the buildings in Greece are painted bright white? 🇬🇷

It isn’t just because they’re beautiful.

The white limewash reflects the intense Mediterranean sun, helping keep homes much cooler during the hot summer months; long before air conditioning existed. It was also inexpensive, naturally antibacterial, and helped protect the buildings from the elements. In fact, whitewashing even became part of public health efforts in the early 1900s because of lime’s disinfecting properties.

Today, those white villages overlooking the sparkling blue sea have become one of the most recognizable travel scenes in the world.

Sometimes the most iconic travel experiences started with simple, practical solutions.

The 155th Open Championship will be played at the legendary Old Course at St Andrews: a place where golf history stretches back centuries.

🏹 1457- The earliest official written record of golf appears in a Scottish Act of Parliament. King James II actually banned the game because people were playing golf instead of practicing the archery needed for Scotland’s defense.

🏌️ 1552- The people of St Andrews were officially granted the right to play golf on the linksland at St Andrews, helping establish it as the Home of Golf.

🌍 1682- One of the earliest recorded international golf matches took place, with Scotland taking on England.

🏆 1860- The very first Open Championship was played in Scotland, beginning what would become golf’s oldest major championship.

And in 2027, the story continues at St Andrews.

There’s watching The Open on TV… and then there’s standing in Scotland, surrounded by centuries of golf history, watching the world’s best players compete at the Home of Golf.

Welcome to a new spooky-season travel series featuring destinations around the world with haunted histories, creepy legends and serious Halloween vibes.

And we’re starting with a good one… Edinburgh. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Imagine walking cobblestone streets after dark, surrounded by centuries-old stone buildings while Edinburgh Castle towers over the city. Now add underground vaults, hidden passageways, ancient graveyards and stories of ghosts that have been told for generations.

👻 Explore the supposedly haunted Edinburgh Vaults beneath the city
🪦 Walk through Greyfriars Kirkyard and hear the legends of the Mackenzie Poltergeist
🏰 Discover the darker stories surrounding Edinburgh Castle
🕯️ Take an underground or candlelit ghost tour after dark
🍺 Finish the night inside a centuries-old pub, preferably one with its own resident ghost story

And the best part? Edinburgh doesn’t have to try to look spooky. The Gothic architecture, narrow closes, misty evenings and medieval Old Town already do the work.
