What an awesome story....A wedding was taking place in downtown in 1993. The bride, Mary Dunning, was getting ready to walk down the aisle when she was stopped by Tom Hanks who was in town filming Forrest Gump. He kissed her on the cheek and the wedding photographer took their photo.
Mrs. Chapman got an autographed copy of the photo sent to her that said, "Congratulations, The only bride more beautiful was the one I married. I’m just sorry I missed the ceremony! God Bless, Tom Hanks."

The “Great Bonfire of 1907” caused more damage than the Civil War did to Beaufort’s structures by far!

119 years ago, three young boys were playing with a cigarette in a barn and started a fire that destroyed over 40 buildings, devastating part of downtown . The Great Fire of 1907 helped shape the downtown district we see today.

311 years ago on this date in 1715, the Yemassee War began with the Pocotaligo Massacre of settlers near Point South. With the help of free Native Americans, enslaved Africans, weapons sent from Virginia and Massachusetts, and reinforcements from North Carolina, all organized by Governor Charles Craven, the settlers quelled an uprising of the Yemassees and other tribes, which threatened the safety of the colony.
