Happy Birthday to Frederick Herzberg (April 18, 1923 – January 19, 2000), a pioneer in motivation theory, job-enrichment, and "self-actualization." Best known for his Motivation-Hygene Theory of job satisfaction - conditions of the job and performance and achievement.

Steps in Motivation
1. Select the jobs in which to invest
2. Approach the jobs with conviction they can be changed
3. Brainstorm
4. Screen and eliminate hygiene rather than motivation
5. Screen and eliminate generalities
6. Screen and eliminate horizontal loading
7. Setup a controlled experiment
8. Be prepared for a drop in performance for the first few weeks
9. Expect some anxiety
10. Learn and repeat

Today we are celebrating the birthday of Henry Luce, one the most influential innovators of his time, having launched magazines such as Time, Fortune, and Life. He was born April 3rd 1898 in Dengzhou, China.

Here is what Peter Drucker saw when he arrived in the United States in 1937:

Time magazine was fifteen years old but still practically without competition, the only national news organ in the country and the only one that could properly be called an “opinion maker.

Fortune, a magazine that would take business seriously as a key feature of American life and society, and would analyze it searchingly pioneered what is now known as “investigative journalism.”

Life first made modern visual perception a part of common American experience; the greatest success in the history of American journalism and the embodiment of a new “life style.”

Drucker called Luce the model of an innovator – he invested in young people, was a great listener, brought technology to the consumer, and believed his gut. He changed how American’s read.
