There are places in Italy that stop you mid-thought. Tropea is one of them.
Perched on a cliff above the Tyrrhenian Sea on Calabria's Costa degli Dei, this is where the water shifts from jade to turquoise, where a 16th-century monastery is now your hotel, where Stromboli glows on the horizon at dinner, and where the locals treat you like a guest in the old-fashioned sense of the word.
Add a day trip to the Aeolian Islands, a bowl of filleja alla tropeana, and a gelato made from the famous Tropea red onion — yes, really, and yes, it's incredible — and you'll understand why Italy named this its most beautiful town.
American travelers haven't caught on yet. That won't last.
