HOW MANY ANIMALS DO YOU CARE FOR? 🤔

One of the questions we get asked most often 🤠

The other day our neighbor Kevin stopped by with a load of gravel so we could fill in some low spots and help prevent standing water. Kevin has watched this place change a lot over the years and has seen just about every animal that has called this place home.

During the conversation, I mentioned that we now care for about 70 animals.

Steve immediately looked at me and said, “Are you sure about that?” 😂

I don’t exactly do a daily inventory.

So of course I had to count 🤷🏻‍♀️

🐰 4 rabbits
🐔 11 chickens
🐐 7 goats
🐱 13 cats
🐶 5 dogs
🐄 3 cows
🐴 1 horse
🦙 4 llamas
🦙 4 alpacas
🐷 8 pigs
🦆 2 ducks
🐟 4 fish
🫏 3 donkeys
🐴 1 mini pony

Total: 70 animals.

The fish may be the most unusual part of the count. They were relocated to two
of our ponds from an undisclosed location after they outgrew their tank and needed a new place to live.

Of course, that’s only the animals we care for. The property is also home to plenty of native Oklahoma wildlife including raccoons, opossums, armadillos, foxes, deer, squirrels, and whatever else decides to wander through.

Come see us sometime 🤗.
Here are just a few 💜

We are in full blown Summer mode here! 🥵
Sunshades, fans, wallows, backup fans, and the whole nine yards 🤪.
Blind steer Stevie has his fly mask on to protect his eye sockets. Stevie and horse Misti have settled in very well and now they compete for scratches and attention 😆.
Holly is the wallow (muddy area) queen 🐷.
I am away most days working, but thank god Farmer Steve takes care of everyone to make sure they are comfortable ❤️.
Stay cool everyone 😎

Hey Y’all! I’m here on Thursdays and can personally recommend some fabulous finds from the on-site grocery store. Yes, I have absolutely tried most of them. 😆

The microgreens will rock your world! If you’ve never tried them with Jill’s homemade dressing, it’s time! Fresh, flavorful, and one of my favorite things in the store…Along with the sourdough bread and goat cheese spreads (variety of flavors), sourdough cookies with chocolate, and the Kombucha 🤩. The Kombucha is fabulous and great for your gut!
Lots of different flavors 😋.
Hope you can stop by the store sometime and check it all out!

💐Putting some flower bouquets in the farm store this week!

Greetings from Wills Point, Texas!

This weekend, we had the opportunity to visit My Pig Filled Life, one of the largest mini pig rescues in the country.

Wow. Just wow 😆

We have never seen anything quite like it.

What started with one woman's love for pigs has grown into a sanctuary that is home to nearly 300 pigs. Melanie, the founder, is the vision behind it all. While she has volunteers who help, she still manages the daily care of the animals by herself while balancing a career outside of the rescue.

Everywhere we turned there were pigs. Big pigs, little pigs, senior pigs, special needs pigs, pigs with incredible stories, and even one pig with no working back legs.

What impressed us most was the thought and care behind every detail.

There were small barns, large barns, medical barns, catch pens, wallows, ponds, shade structures, and cozy little places tucked throughout the property. There were grapes hanging from vines, sunflowers attracting pollinators, blueberries, apples, cucumbers, butterflies, cardinals, ducks, cats, sheep, guinea fowl, and more.

It felt less like a rescue and more like a tiny village from a story book built around giving animals a second chance.

We were blown away.

Thank you, Melanie, for opening your gates and sharing your story with us. The creativity, dedication, and heart behind My Pig Filled Life is hard to put into words. It was an experience we won't forget! 💚

Pets of any kind shouldn’t be a fad😵‍💫

Today Steve and I are headed to Wills Point, Texas to visit My Pig Filled Life, one of the largest pig sanctuaries in the United States, caring for nearly 300 pigs.

What many people don’t realize is that about 90% of pet “mini” pigs are surrendered within their first two years. I understand the attraction because our pigs, Bo and Luke, were the very first animals to arrive at our farm in 2018 after years of me wanting pigs of my own. They are one of the smartest animals on the planet 🌎💚

As of today we have adopted six pigs between Tulsa Animal Welfare and the Humane Society of Tulsa (we have 8 total). We have been asked to take in dozens more through individuals, and while we’d love to help them all, responsible animal care sometimes means knowing your limits.

We also support other rescues doing amazing work, including Misfits of Oz in Yale, Oklahoma, where we sponsor a pig named Hagan.

One thing I’ve learned is that caring about pigs isn’t about choosing sides. Whether you eat bacon or not, we can all agree that animals deserve responsible care, humane treatment, and a safe place to land when life doesn’t go as planned.

We’re excited to learn from one of the best and bring back ideas that will help us continue caring for the animals entrusted to us. ❤️🐷

Stay tuned for photos and updates from our visit this weekend!

It has been one month since Misti the horse and Stevie the blind cow joined us from the Tulsa Humane Society.

Misti has gained weight, settled in nicely, and definitely enjoys a good brushing. She is great on the lead and has such a gentle spirit. We’re so happy to see her feeling more comfortable and relaxed each day.

Stevie is learning his way around more every day. One thing about being blind is that absolutely nothing seems to faze him — he just follows our voices and goes with the flow, which honestly makes him one of the easiest boys to care for. This week we will get him fitted for a fly mask to help protect his eye sockets from flies and irritation during the summer heat.

Every day we spend a few minutes getting our hands on both of them (literally) so we can continue to earn their trust.
Thanks for following along with our adventures 🤠❤️

🌱 What’s Been Growin’ On 🌱

This summer, I’m completing my internship through Oklahoma State University at Robinson Ranch, learning more about greenhouse production, micro-greens, regenerative agriculture, and expanding my knowledge of local farm operations and community-focused agriculture.

There are about a dozen of us students spread throughout Oklahoma and beyond this summer completing our major in Agricultural Leadership, each gaining hands-on experience in different areas of agriculture along the way.

At Robinson Ranch, there are about 10 of us working together this summer, and it has been such a rewarding experience learning alongside people passionate about agriculture and local food. A big thank you to Kat, Jill, and the entire Robinson Ranch team for sharing their knowledge and allowing me to be part of the experience.

My hope is to bring some of this knowledge and inspiration back to Okie Grown Farms as we continue growing and creating new experiences for our guests over time.

Steve is mowing, and I’m about to do some housekeeping for the next guest.
No third party management or corporate nonsense. Just two people who love to host. 😊
