NoseWork, Lagotto Romagnolo, Truffle Oil, Forest: Hunting Pecan Truffles Before Season

Pecan Truffle Season is August through December/January. Although you might get lucky and find some in off-season. We focus our search in the environment that they grow.

Please note we contacted the Ranger Station for the area to make sure we did not need a permit to forage truffle. Ranger said no permit is needed for a small quantity.

NoseWork, Lagotto Romagnolo, Truffle Oil, Forest: Stopping Dog From Digging Target With Commands

Working side-by-side with your Lagotto to assist in digging and/or retrieving the truffle undamaged can be achieved through teaching commands for each step of the process. Rocco’s commands include:

1. Sit Wait (While I dig the hole)
2. Break Find It (Given after target placed and covered with soil)
3. Sit Wait (stops digging completes commands and allows me to dig in hole also)

Step number 3 is where we currently are working. The goal is not to damage the truffle.

My Lagotto Rocco is learning in the forest and I’ve got the “target” (aluminum foil wrapped cotton ball with truffle oil) as Rocco continues to build his skills to hunt truffles. I’m using marker training. I’m marking the behavior I want with a high value reward. He likes cheese-whiz and freeze dried duck liver.

It’s game day and there are three games we are playing.

1. Throw target anywhere in forest “find it”.
2. Bury target under leaves in forest “find it”.
3. Bury target in soil and leaves in forest “find it”.

How To Hunt For Truffles: Step By Step Guide

I thought it might be helpful to put together some of the information of “How To Hunt For Truffles” and share as I also asked the question: “Where Do I Begin?” I’m new to truffle hunting and I have no background in nosework or truffle hunting. I did my homework---still doing homework and hope this guide might be helpful.

NoseWork, Lagotto Romagnolo, Truffle Oil, Forest: Hunting Truffles (Most Likely Deer Truffle)

Rocco and I took a walk through our property to see if he could scent any type of truffle. Rocco did some digging and looking. So proud of him!

The peak season for Pecan Truffles is August and September. Georgia typically runs from late summer through the fall and into winter generally August through December.

Rocco also did 3 Truffle Target Finds. Rocco is learning in the forest and I’ve got the “target” (aluminum foil wrapped cotton ball with truffle oil) as Rocco continues to build his skills to hunt truffles. I’m using marker training. I’m marking the behavior I want with a high value reward. He likes cheese-whiz and freeze dried duck liver.

NoseWork, Lagotto Romagnolo, Truffle Oil, Forest: Side By Side Working With Your Dog

Continuing to work with Rocco “side by side”. After a dog starts digging you don’t have much time to get to the dog so the truffle is not damaged. I’m working with Rocco, a robust digger, to teach him to stop digging and “sit” after he spots the target.

I’m digging a shallow hole in the forest placing target and “Rocco, Break, Find It” while encouraging him to dig. Each dig event I’m digging the hole deeper. It is okay to work along side your dog truffle hunting and building a stronger bond.
