After 3 agonizing weeks of waiting, I finally got my visa to Turkmenistan!! I'm going in March. THEN I found out that I can add a layover in Dubai for only $15 more. Well, can't say no to that, right?

Middle East and Central Asia are new regions for me. So I'm super stoked :)

Visiting San Francisco? I have 2 tips for you:
1. Don't drive.
2. If you ignore tip #1, don't leave anything in the car. LEAVE NOTHING IN THE CAR (that means grocery bags, sweater, ice chest, etc). https://ww2.kqed.org/news/2018/02/15/car-breaks-ins-are-up-in-san-francisco-whats-being-done

Last year alone there were 30000 car breakins reported in San Francisco. Every week, I see a car with broken window on our block. It makes me so mad!

The city saw more than 30,000 car break-ins last year — nearly three times that of 2010.

Latest post on jackandjilltravel.com is about books (I also accidentally revealed my next destination - visa still pending. Fingers crossed. Anxiety level: very high).

One of the ways I get more out of my travels (so that it's not just about pretty pics) is to read about my destination as much as possible. It's very cool to see characters and stories from a book come to life. I don't think I'd enjoyed my visit to Tikal, Guatemala as much if I hadn't read The Lost City of the Monkey God, for example.

So I asked a bunch of people about their fave travel books and compiled a list of the bests. There are books on/about 20+ countries here. Some fictions, some cozy mysteries, and some focus on just eating food. Hope you like it, and feel free to recommend your own.

Trying to be conscious about the impact of my travel is always at the back of my mind. I try to vote with my dollars by spending money on as many small businesses as possible, and I'm very wary of any attractions involving animals. I think this article from Two Dusty Travelers sums up a lot of my thoughts on ethical travel. What do you think?

Except for plane tickets, I don't get myself "stuff". So when I do - it feels like Christmas. And today feels like Christmas!! Just hit "Purchase" on a new camera that I'd been ogling for MONTHS! It'll be a nice upgrade to my 5yo camera that's been through quite a bit. The new family member is the Olympus EM10 II. I love its retro-look, the in camera stabilization, flip screen, WIFI - all the shiny baubles. 🤩🤩😍😍

As for where I'm going next, I can't wait to tell you, but I'm waiting for my paperwork to come through, until then it's not a sure thing. Hint: it's a completely new region for me and I'm learning Russian. (But no, I'm not going to Russia, that'll be too easy :))
