Have you ever listened to the way you speak about your experience?

I recently had a mock interview session with a client.

She was an accomplished attorney who was interviewing for a senior director role at a non-profit.

As her coach, one of my roles was to give her feedback on her interview answers.

While she was damn near flawless, she really knew her stuff, and her ability to story tell kept me mesmerized.

I noticed a terrible habit with some of her answers.

She would very subtly downplay her experience and her achievements.

She wasn't even aware that she was doing it.

As the listener, I felt it took away from her credibility.

I asked her where that came from and she said it was a bad habit.

It was born out of a desire to be humble and modest but in this case, it was sabotaging her success.

She was thankful for the feedback.

It was exactly what she needed to feel confident and prepared to go into her panel interview.

Do you downplay your achievements?

Do you focus on your lack of experience in a new field?

Do you dim your light to make others like you more?

Consider the reasons why you do that.

And choose a new way to speak about yourself that puts you in the best light.

DM me to discuss how we can improve your interview skills.

How are you compromising yourself in your career?

I’m reading a book on marketing and personal branding and the author states that before you can build a compelling personal brand you must identify all the ways you hide and hold yourself back because you are afraid of what other people think, looking bad, feeling like an impostor, etc.

I recognize my fear of looking bad and not feeling good enough holding me back in certain areas of my career.

I recognize the same issues with my clients who are afraid to go after what they really want.

While the fear feels real it is important to recognize it and build a strategy to help you move forward.

I find having an accountability partner/group helps me move forward despite my fears.

Nothing good comes from staying complacent because your scared of what might happen.

Find a way to move forward, take small steps, ask for help.

How to build a great connection with your interviewer.

My client has been doing a great job networking to find his next job.

The networking led to referrals which led to a few interviews.

He was told he was a great fit, just what they needed.

But he didn’t get any offers.

He was crushed. He felt he did well on the interviews.

But without any feedback he had no idea what he was doing wrong.

In our session I asked him to judge his own performance. What did he think he did wrong?

He shared that while he is comfortable and relaxed and enjoys talking to people at networking events, he gets nervous and hates talking about himself in the interview.

It was like he was two different people.

He realized that he was focused on impressing the interviewer and that changed who he was being. He hated having to promote himself.

He wasn’t relaxed, confident, curious, and charming. The things that make for a good conversation and help to build a good connection.

He realized that he needed to treat the interview like a networking situation which would allow him to relax and build a great connection first.

What is your mindset when you step into an interview?

Are you relaxed, curious, and confident?

Are you excited about having a great conversation with another human being?

Do you think about connecting with the interviewer?

Or are you nervous and only focused on yourself and what you are saying?

How can you be good at your job and build a reputation that gets you noticed and promoted when the thought of self-promotion makes you cringe?

03/25/2019

"Maybe this isn't for me."

Those were the terrifying yet honest words that came out of my client's mouth today.

He is a software programmer that doesn't want to be a programmer. In fact, he never really wanted to be one it was what his parents wanted for him.

But this was the breakthrough moment he needed.

He needed to admit that he was simply following his parent's wishes rather than his own.

Today he could look at his future as a blank canvas that he gets to paint.

"What would you want to do if you didn't have to be a programmer tomorrow", I asked him?

The answer was clear to him and it had been clear to him this whole time. He was just afraid to make a change because of social pressure.

But he is finally at a place where he knows he can't live for the opinions of others.

Caring what other people think is not a recipe for career success, especially if you don't even enjoy what you are doing.

What is the honest truth you need to admit to yourself about your career path?

What would you do if you didn't care what other people thought?

It is difficult to figure out what you want careerwise if you aren't being honest with yourself.

Give yourself permission to start listening to your own voice.

How can you be good at your job and build a reputation that gets you noticed and promoted when the thought of self-promotion makes you cringe?

Here is a crazy question.

How are you never going to find a job you love?

Or to ask it another way

What do you have to do to stay stuck, frustrated, and unfulfilled in your career?

Write down your answers.

Learn what is holding you back and do the exact opposite.

I know what my answers were a decade ago when I was feeling stuck in my career.

- believe that I’m not good enough, smart enough, lucky enough, well connected enough to get the job I really want

- obsess over what family and friends would think or say

- assume it’s too late for me to start over

- assume it’s too risky to make a change

- assume people wouldn’t want to help me

- assume I would look like I had no idea what I was doing

- assume I wouldn’t make enough money

Now it’s your turn.

Look at your list of answers and ask yourself if you want to keep letting those things stop you or will you take action today to get started.

I’m glad I didn’t let those thoughts hold me back for too long.

I was able to find ways to overcome those limiting beliefs and build a fulfilling career.

Comment below and share your best strategies for overcoming limiting beliefs and assumptions.

Upset that you got passed up for a promotion?
