Some destinations require a detailed itinerary.

Newport requires an Adirondack chair, an Aperol Spritz, and the good sense not to schedule anything else.

Labor Day: when Americans put away the white pants and Europe quietly becomes much nicer.

The crowds ease. The days cool. Harvest season begins along the rivers. September isn’t the end of the season. It’s the reward for waiting.

Because even nuns need a good travel advisor.

Years ago, I sat in Los Angeles traffic for three hours to meet Gloria Steinem at a book signing—and I’d do it again in a heartbeat.

When it was my turn, I thanked her for everything she had done to make it possible for women like me to have choices and live independent lives. She was brilliant and beautiful, but what struck me most was how warm, gracious, and completely genuine she was.

As she handed my book back, she smiled at me and said, “Keep on traveling!”

I did, Gloria. And I will.

Just another day in Provence.

A bicycle, a restaurant, and a pig in the window.
I have questions.

God, I love France.

Do you remember… September in Europe?

Golden vineyards. Harvest season. Crisp mornings.
Honestly, what’s not to love?

This is why I never get tired of Southeast Asia.

You can spend the day chasing temples, markets and whatever happens to be on the itinerary — and then the sun drops behind a row of palms and completely steals the show.

Somewhere in Vietnam, doing absolutely nothing to earn this view.

There comes a point when waiting for the perfect travel companion becomes rather ridiculous.

On a river cruise, you can have breakfast entirely to yourself, join an excursion when you feel like company, and by cocktail hour you’ll almost certainly know someone at the bar. Stay for dinner, make plans for tomorrow or disappear back to your cabin with a book. The choice is entirely yours.

Possibly the best part of solo travel is realizing how little permission you actually needed.

Five countries in ten days sounds ambitious, but it is considerably less so when your hotel comes with you.

In April 2027, we’re sailing from Budapest to Bucharest aboard Uniworld’s S.S. Beatrice, traveling through Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria and Romania. And because Bucharest seems an unfortunate place to stop when Transylvania is just up the road, there’s an optional extension there too.

One of my favorite river cruise rituals happens just before dinner.

On AmaWaterways, it’s called Sip & Sail. Everyone drifts back to the ship after a day ashore, finds their way to the lounge, orders a cocktail and compares notes on the day. It’s relaxed, social and usually ends with someone saying, “You did WHAT excursion?”

The cocktails are complimentary, the company tends to be excellent, and tomorrow you get to do it all over again somewhere new.

As for the Lemon Drop? A very good place to start.
