Northern Michigan July 4th Destination Spotlight: Bay Harbor

One of the biggest Fourth of July secrets in Northern Michigan?

Bay Harbor celebrates its fireworks on July 3rd not July 4th.

Most visitors don't realize this, but once you know it, you can completely change the way you plan your holiday weekend.

Spend July 3rd enjoying waterfront dining, live music, and fireworks over Little Traverse Bay in Bay Harbor. Then wake up on July 4th with an entire day free to explore another Northern Michigan celebration.

That's how locals turn one holiday into two unforgettable nights.

A few Bay Harbor highlights:

July 3rd Fireworks Over the Bay
Live Music Before the Fireworks
July 4th Village Parade
Waterfront Dining & Cocktails
Bonfires & S'mores by the Lake
Beach Cruisers & E-Bikes

Bay Harbor offers a more relaxed, upscale Fourth of July experience while keeping you close to Petoskey, Harbor Springs, Charlevoix, and other Northern Michigan destinations.

That's exactly the kind of local insight I love sharing with visitors.

Northern Michigan July 4th Destination Spotlight: Harbor Springs

Planning a Northern Michigan Fourth of July getaway?

Harbor Springs is one of my favorite recommendations for visitors looking for a classic small-town Independence Day celebration.

This charming waterfront community offers a full day of family-friendly events, including:

Wiener Dog Races
Paul Revere 5K & 10 Mile Run
Waterfront Art Show
Fourth of July Parade
Pre-Fireworks Concert
Fireworks over the Harbor

Local Tip: Harbor Springs' parade starts at 1 PM, while Petoskey's parade starts at 6 PM. Since the two towns are less than 10 miles apart, you can enjoy both communities in one amazing day.

That's exactly the kind of insider information I love sharing with visitors.

Northern Michigan July 4th Destination Spotlight: Petoskey

Petoskey is one of those places where you don't really need a reason to be there. You just end up there and feel grateful that you are.

The Fourth of July is no exception.

You can spend the afternoon wandering downtown, grab dinner overlooking Little Traverse Bay, catch the Steel Drum Band at the waterfront, watch one of those famous Petoskey sunsets, and then end the night with fireworks over the bay.

It's simple. It's beautiful. And it feels like summer should feel.

One thing I always tell people planning their holiday weekend: Petoskey and Harbor Springs both have fireworks around 10:30 PM on July 4th. They're only a few miles apart, but you'll need to choose one for the grand finale.

The good news? Harbor Springs has its parade at 1 PM and Petoskey's parade starts at 6 PM. If you plan it right, you can experience both towns in the same day and still have time to enjoy everything in between.

That's the kind of thing most visitors don't find out until they're already here.

I've spent enough Fourth of July weekends in Northern Michigan to know which towns pair well together, what events are worth prioritizing, and how to make the most of your time without spending half the day in traffic.

If you're trying to decide between Petoskey, Harbor Springs, Mackinac Island, Traverse City, Boyne City, or somewhere else this holiday weekend, I've put together a guide that brings everything together in one place.

Have you ever spent the Fourth in Petoskey? What's your favorite part the parade, the sunset, or the fireworks?

Northern Michigan July 4th Destination Spotlight: Mackinac Island

If you've never experienced the Fourth of July on Mackinac Island, it belongs on your bucket list.

No cars. No traffic. Just history, tradition, family fun, and one of the most unique Independence Day celebrations in America.

Step back in time with Fort Mackinac's historic 1880s-era celebration featuring a reading of the Declaration of Independence, cannon firings, period music, children's games, and a 38-gun salute. Then cap off the day with breathtaking fireworks over Lake Huron.

One of my favorite local tips? If you're out on the water, you may be able to see fireworks from Mackinac Island, Mackinaw City, and St. Ignace all at the same time. Three shows, one incredible view.

Stone Skipping Competition
Family Games & Activities
Fort Mackinac Celebration
Horse-Drawn Carriage Rides
Dual Fireworks Displays

Boyne City this one's personal.
My kids go to school here. This is our community. And every Fourth of July, I get a little emotional watching that Grand Parade roll down Lake and Main Streets because this year, my daughter will be marching in it with the band.
So yeah, Boyne City holds a very special place in my heart.
But here's what I want YOU to know: everything on this graphic? It's just the highlight reel. Boyne City isn't a one-day town it's a stay all weekend kind of place. Think quiet sandy beaches on Lake Charlevoix, kayaking at sunrise, boat rentals, waterfront dining, boutique shopping, hiking trails, and a downtown that just feels like summer should feel.
The 4th of July weekend here is just the excuse to come. The lake will keep you.
Duck races on the Boyne River. Kids on decorated bikes. Fireworks over Lake Charlevoix at 10:30pm. Live music all afternoon. A craft fair. Food trucks. And somewhere in that parade a band kid who has no idea her mom is about to cry on the sidewalk. πŸ˜‚β€οΈ
Whether you're a local, a seasonal regular, or you've never been Boyne City on the Fourth of July is something you need to experience at least once.
πŸ‘‡ Have you been to Boyne City for the 4th? Drop your favorite memory below or tell me you're coming this year so I can share ALL the hidden gems to make your weekend unforgettable!
