WHY ARE THERE ANTS ON MY PEONIES?!

Who doesn’t like sweets? Ants are attracted by nectar produced by peonies. Peonies, like many other plants, have special glands on their stems around the sepals that secrete a sugary substance.

When buds are forming, it is a banquet for ants. They simply collect nectar, and do not harm the bud, stem or any other part of the plant. Actually, ants protect their food source from any other predators. Hence they guard the reproductive organs of the peony from possible invasion of other harmful insects.

While peonies are forming the gorgeous blooms for us to enjoy, ants are rewarded by sweet liquid by keeping other piercing-sucking and chewing insects away, because not many like to share sweets, and nature is smart.

A gardening hint:
To avoid ants’ presence in your cut peonies for indoor use, simply dip the cut stems with buds down in a bucket of water to wash ants off.

Plants perceive the world without eyes, ears or brains. Understanding how can teach us a lot about them, and potentially a lot about us as well
