Big news this morning—Spirit Airlines has officially shut down operations effective immediately.
After a $500 million federal bailout fell through at the last minute, they had no choice but to start winding things down. A group of creditors wouldn’t agree to the terms, and that was basically the final straw.
If you currently have a Spirit flight booked, do NOT head to the airport. If you booked directly through Spirit using a credit or debit card, refunds will be processed automatically. If you used a travel agent, you’ll need to reach out to them to get that refund started.
Also—and this is important—Spirit is not covering extra expenses like last-minute hotels or other costs. The only way those would be covered is if you have travel insurance.
This isn’t just a typical airline cancellation. This is the first time a major U.S. airline has shut down like this since 2001, so it’s a big deal.
There were around 9,000 Spirit flights scheduled through the end of May, with about 1.8 million passengers affected. That’s a lot of people now trying to rebook, so expect things to be a bit chaotic.
Other airlines like United, Southwest, JetBlue, Delta, and American are stepping in with capped or “rescue” fares on some of these routes, which helps—but just know, these aren’t the super low Spirit prices. You’ll likely be paying quite a bit more than you originally did.
Between rising fuel costs and ongoing financial struggles, Spirit just couldn’t keep up. The budget airline model works… until it doesn’t.
If you (or anyone you know) have upcoming travel plans, now is definitely the time to double-check your flights and make sure everything is still good to go.
