THIRTY-THREE YEARS!
Dail Dinwiddie was last see about 1:30am on September 24, 1992. She attended a U2 concert the night before and then went with friends to Jungle Jim’s, a popular hangout for college students in the Five Points area of downtown Columbia.
Dail lost track of her friends and went outside to check the parking lot. When she returned she approached the bar’s bouncer and told him she was separated from the group of friends she was with earlier.
Dail was alone when she left the bar a short time later. The bouncer noted that she appeared to be in a hurry. She cut through the parking lot of the bar and rushed up the street towards the intersection of Harden and Greene Streets without stopping, then faded from view. She inadvertently left her purse behind.

At the time of Dail’s disappearance security cameras were not widely used for surveillance of the Five Points area, and cell phones were not commonly used in 1992 either.

Dail has light brown hair and brown eyes. At the time of her disappearance, she was 5 feet tall and weighed approximately 95 pounds, and she had blonde highlights in her hair. She has pierced ears and dimples when she smiles. One finger on each of her hands is deformed and curves slightly, and Dail had severe asthma and allergies when she went missing. At the time, she was getting allergy shots twice a week and used an inhaler to control her asthma.

Although her case is cold, it is still considered an active investigation and both law enforcement and Dail’s family have vowed to keep up the search until they get some answers.

If you have any information on Dail, please call the Columbia Police Department at 803–233–8474 or 803-749-5836
Or call CRIMESTOPPERS at 1-888-CRIME-SC

Photos below show what Dail looked like at the time of her disappearance and an age progression of what she may look like today.

2026 will mark the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. In honor of the 250th, Long Gone SC created a genealogy research project called, “How Revolutionary are YOU?” to inspire people to find their Rev War connection.
Earlier this year we asked people to submit applications for the program and we received close to 30 responses.
Our researchers chose one applicant, Cristal Bryant Orr, for us to figure out just how Revolutionary she is. Using multiple tools including genetic genealogy, documents, and family records to help trace Cristal’s ancestry, we were able to connect Cristal to a Rev War ancestor.
Thank you to our researchers Paula Wise, Kathryn Matthews Watkins, and Brenda Bradley.

We are very interested to read this perspective on the life of P*e Wee Gaskins. Available for Pre Order now. Release date December 16, 2025.

After decades of silence, I’m finally telling the full story. Available on 12/16/25.

Dig Me a Grave is the book I never expected to write, but had to. It’s a true Southern Gothic account of South Carolina’s most notorious serial killer, P*e Wee Gaskins—a man I prosecuted for crimes so brutal they ultimately led to his ex*****on by electric chair.

This one is for my daughter, Kate. I’ll always do whatever it takes to keep you safe.
