Kristiansand, Norway today is our first time in Norway. It was founded in 1641 by King Christian IV, who named the city after himself. As a maritime city it has had a long history of strategic importance for Norway.

We decided to hike Odderøya
which is an island connected to downtown Kristiansand by bridges. It has been used for military defense since the 17th century and guards the approaches to the city’s harbor. It was important in WWII and remnants are still visible today. We have a lot of stops on Norways West coast and Fjords over the next few weeks… Good start with Kristiansand…

Visby, Sweden is one of the most historically significant towns in Scandinavia and is often called the “City of Roses and Ruins.” It is located on the island of Gotland. Historically by the 10th and 11th centuries Visby had grown into a prosperous trading settlement eventually becoming in the 12th to 14th centuries one of the wealthiest cities in northern Europe and an important member of the Hanseatic League. We spent most of the day exploring this medieval walled city and the impressive ancient church ruins …

Over the years we have done a fair amount of days cruising with some favorite port departures for sure. One of our favorites is the nighttime departure in Sydney, Australia. Milford Sound in New Zealand and of course departing Malta at night was special. Today’s departure from Stockholm, Sweden has to be in the same discussions… 54 miles of breathtaking scenery of coastline, endless islands, and many, many rock outcroppings provided a memorable finish to the spectacular port of Stockholm!

Founded by Sweden in 1550 Helsinki was originally established with the hope of competing as a port with Tallin, Estonia. It fell under Russian rule in 1812 after the Finnish War and remained that way until 1917 where it became independent and Helsinki became Finland’s capital. We spent most of the day walking the city, though the pouring rain dampened the experience some. Nonetheless we added another country to our growing list adding Finland 🇫🇮 …

Our most Eastern country visited yet on this 2026 adventure was today in Tallinn, Estonia… Founded before the 1200’s Estonia has had been conquered by a myriad of countries over the years. It has been controlled by Vikings, The Danes, Germany, Sweden, Russia and the Soviet Union. Russia was in control from 1710-1918 when they finally became independent though they fell back under Soviet rule after WWII. Finally in 1991 they became independent again and joined NATO and the EU IN 2004. “Old Town Tallinn” a medieval/walled city that’s also a UNESCO Work Heritage Site includes streets, alleys, a cobblestoned history, and the historic Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, the large Russian Orthodox cathedral with black onion domes on Toompea Hill. A beautiful historic city which was easily walkable from our cruise port … Many people have told us they “Love” Tallinn and we can certainly see why…..

As we continue East our stop today was Warnemünde, Germany 🇩🇪 on the Baltic Coast. Many fellow passengers opted for the all day trip to Berlin (2.5 hrs by train each way.) - Since we were there last month we decided to kick back and just venture into Warnemünde. A beach community with a vibrant tourist based downtown, we just walked and explored this beach city. We finished the evening in the Princess Theatre where singer Angie Grace Brown’s show was super

Founded in the 10th century as a Viking fishing village, Copenhagen grew into the capital of Denmark in the early 15th century. The city is home to many iconic landmarks where history meets modern Scandinavian style. 🇩🇰
Copenhagen is also closely linked to the famous fairy-tale writer Hans Christian Andersen. We spent several hours touring the city on the HOHO (Hop On-Hop Off Bus Tour) followed by a scenic river cruise through the canals …

Our first Port stop in the Baltics was Skagen, Denmark. This is the location where the North Sea intersects with the Baltic Sea. We left the ship around 9:30am and started our journey to the “Grenen Bunkers/Lighthouse area”. Many formal tours headed to this area and also tons of people rented bicycles in town to do the tour. We decided to walk the 8 miles round trip which included a walk thru downtown when we returned … Definitely got our steps in today…
