I’m Peter Balunek, founder and lead guide, and I personally curate every journey across Africa to create private, immersive, and unforgettable safari experiences. Peter’s Safaris helps to promote the conservation and preservation of Africa's wildlife by introducing our guests to the magical continent of Africa. However, their lives are threatened and they need our help. If something isn’t done soo

n to turn the tide on the wildlife poaching and illegal wildlife trade, these animals might not be around for our children and grandchildren to enjoy. I believe that one person can make a difference and I’m trying to make a difference 6 people at a time. I am hoping that my guests will fall in love with Africa, just like I did, and want to try and make a difference in their own way. My goal is to provide a highly personalized safari experience. Not everything in Africa runs on four legs. 🪶 A group of ostriches moving through a dry Namibian riverbed, rocky kopjes rising behind them — this is the Namib at its most cinematic. The world's largest bird, ostriches can sprint at 45 mph and deliver a kick powerful enough to kill a lion. They're often overlooked on safari in favor of the big cats, but stop and watch a group like this for a few minutes and you'll see something surprisingly complex — social dynamics, dominance displays, and constant vigilance. Namibia never runs out of surprises.

Leopards are notoriously solitary — males and females come together only briefly to mate, then part ways entirely. The female will raise any cubs completely alone. Leopard mating pairs typically stay together for just a few days, mating repeatedly throughout the cycle, and encounters like this one are fleeting, unpredictable, and almost never witnessed. The male's snarl is pure instinct — leopard mating is intense and brief, and the female moves off almost immediately after. Witnessing this on the Mara was an extraordinary privilege that most guides never see in a lifetime.

Pure joy, earned the hard way. 🐘 This elephant at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust's Ithumba Reintegration Unit in Tsavo National Park knows exactly what a mud bath is for — sun protection, parasite control, and on this particular afternoon, what looks like sheer exuberance. Every elephant at Ithumba arrived as an orphan, most having lost their mothers to poaching or human-wildlife conflict. The Sheldrick Trust's reintegration program is one of the most successful of its kind in the world, gradually returning these elephants to wild herds in Tsavo. Watching them thrive like this is what conservation looks like in practice.

The weight of the world in one tiny face. 🐆 This cheetah cub, just weeks old, looks up at its mother with complete trust — and she carries that responsibility with quiet vigilance. Cheetah mothers raise their cubs entirely alone, moving them constantly to evade lions, leopards, and hyenas that see cubs as competition to eliminate. Of all the big cat mothers on the Mara, the cheetah's journey may be the most precarious. Fewer than 7,000 cheetahs remain in the wild, making every surviving cub a genuine victory.

This moment, this fragile bond — this is exactly why conservation matters.

Groceries delivered. 🐦 This Atlantic puffin is on a mission — bill packed with sand eels, wings a blur, heading back to the burrow to feed its chick. Puffins are remarkable parents, making dozens of fishing runs a day during breeding season, sometimes diving 60 meters deep to catch their haul. Not all zebras are created equal. 🦓 This is a Grevy's zebra — the largest wild equid on earth and one of the most endangered. Distinguished from the common plains zebra by its narrower stripes, massive rounded ears, and white belly, the Grevy's is a true rarity. Samburu National Reserve in northern Kenya is one of the last places on earth where you can reliably find them, and catching one mid-stride like this, bursting through yellow wildflowers, is the kind of frame you don't forget.

Fewer than 3,000 Grevy's zebra remain in the wild. Every sighting matters.

Misunderstood and magnificent. 🐾

Spotted hyenas get a bad reputation, but spend time watching a clan like this one near their den and you'll see something different — complex social bonds, fierce loyalty, and surprisingly tender family dynamics. Hyena clans are matriarchal, highly intelligent, and among the most successful predators on the continent. This group, gathered at their den in the Maasai Mara, is a reminder that Africa's wildlife is full of stories we rarely take the time to learn.
