A wood fence adds beauty, privacy, and value to your home, and a little routine maintenance can help keep it looking great for years.
Here are a few simple tips from B&B Fences:
🪵 Stain it early. For a new wood fence, we recommend applying the first stain within about two months of installation. This helps protect the wood from moisture and sun exposure.
💦 Give it a yearly cleaning. Rinse away dirt, pollen, and mildew with a garden hose or low-pressure washer. Older fences may benefit from a good fence or deck cleaner before staining.
🔎 Check it regularly. Keep an eye out for rotting boards, loose hardware, leaning posts, sagging sections, or signs of termites and carpenter ants. Catching small problems early can save you from bigger repairs later.
🎨 Re-stain or paint every 2–3 years. A quality stain or paint adds UV protection and helps prevent the wood from turning gray over time.
🌿 Give it some breathing room. Keep bushes, vines, and sprinklers from constantly resting against or soaking the fence.
🚫 Keep the base clear. Mulch, dirt, firewood, leaves, and other debris can hold moisture against the wood and invite pests.
🧢 Consider post caps. They help protect the tops of your posts from rain while giving your fence a finished look.
🔩 Don’t forget the gates! Check hinges, latches, and screws each year, and try not to let gates slam shut. Repeated impact can loosen hardware over time.
A little care goes a long way when it comes to protecting your fence and your investment.
