🧠🌍 Did you know that Yugoslavia was once one of the most important countries in southeastern Europe, but no longer exists today?

The former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia consisted of six republics: Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, and Macedonia. It covered approximately 255,800 km² (98,800 sq mi) and had a population of about 23.5 million in 1991. Its capital was Belgrade, which is now the capital of Serbia.

During the 1990s, political tensions, independence movements, and a series of armed conflicts led to the breakup of Yugoslavia.

🌎 In 2026, the former Yugoslav territory includes six United Nations member states: Slovenia 🇸🇮, Croatia 🇭🇷, Bosnia and Herzegovina 🇧🇦, Serbia 🇷🇸, Montenegro 🇲🇪, and North Macedonia 🇲🇰.

Kosovo 🇽🇰 also declared independence from Serbia in 2008, but its status remains disputed, and it is not universally recognized as an independent country.

The breakup began in 1991 and continued with Montenegro's independence in 2006, profoundly reshaping the political map of the Balkans.
