Midnight hike anyone⁉️

Last night, we had quite the treat! Thanks to good weather and midnight sun, we were able to venture to Drangey Island. This uninhabited, 600-foot volcanic island is only accessible by boat. 🚤 It’s unreal arriving, like something out of Jurassic Park!

Hiking here is not for the faint of heart. Its sheer cliffs mean a nearly straight up hike to get to the top. 🔝

So what’s the draw to climb? 🧗🏼

One word: PUFFINS! 🐧

Drangey is a haven for seabirds— puffins, guillemots, and fulmars. There are thousands of nests all around you and you can’t take any step without a bird sighting!

The top of the island is a beautiful plateau where you can truly get a birds eye view of the ocean and bluffs beneath you. 🦤🪺👀

Our fourth day on our National Geographic Linblad Exhibition was a little bit different. Everyone on board had two options for morning excursions in Skagafjörður: farm and museum tours or white water rafting.

We decided to split our party up and have the best of both worlds!

Group 1 visited the Lýtingsstaðir Horse Farm to get up close and personal with Icelandic horses, followed by a tour of the iconic Glaumbær Turf Farm.

Group 2 went glacial white water rafting through fjords and enjoyed hot chocolate heated by the geothermal springs.

Following a day of adventures, we had dinner and then prepared for a late night hike. Now this hike is like no other because it’s scaling the bluffs of Drangey, a famous Viking island. It’s well-known as the nesting grounds of many types of birds. Here you can find kittiwakes and the ever popular puffin! The hike was strenuous but totally worth it!

The Glaumbær Turf Farm & Museum is located in Skagafjörður in Northern Iceland. It’s a charming farmhouse consisting of 13 buildings, most of which are connected by hallway tunnels.

This site has had a farm on it since the settlement of Iceland in approximately 874, and amazingly people lived in the Glaumbær turf house until 1947!

Turf houses are remarkably warm and serve as a great reprieve from harsh winters and windy summer days.
