A cobblestone street looks the same to everyone who steps onto it. What you know about it is what makes it yours.

Booking Italy for August? The calendar matters more than most families realize.

Here's what happens when you wait: one family held off until June to book their August trip. By then, the private guide they wanted was fully committed, the hilltop agriturismo they'd saved was sold out, and they ended up on a group bus with 40 strangers. August is Italy's peak month, and private guides in Rome, Florence, and the Amalfi Coast are routinely booked solid by February. The family-friendly stays in smaller towns fill 4 to 6 months out. The first time I entered the Duomo Santa Maria del Fiori was the week of September 11, 2001. There was a special Mass offered by the American priest, and my friend and I decided to attend. Standing here 25 years later was overwhelming, thinking back on how scared we were back then, so far away from home. The Italians were so kind to us, always asking if our families were ok. I just kept having this recount in my head of all the things I have gotten to do and see over the past 25 years and of the people whose lives were cut short that day. Hug your loved ones and enjoy life to the fullest. L
