Geauga Park District’s Welton’s Gorge Preserve is often called “Geauga’s Little Grand Canyon.” This remarkable 87-acre preserve features a dramatic 45-foot-deep gorge that exposes Sharon sandstone and conglomerate formed nearly 300 million years ago, when this region was covered by braided rivers.

The cool, shaded gorge creates a unique habitat where eastern hemlocks, ferns, mosses, salamanders, and other wildlife thrive—making it one of Geauga County’s most ecologically significant places. Whether you’re taking in the scenic overlooks or hiking the peaceful trails, Welton’s Gorge is a reminder that some of Ohio’s most incredible landscapes are right here in our own backyard.
