ITâS SOUTHWEST COMPANION PASS TIME!!
Yes, once again it is Southwest Companion Pass Time!! Of Course, timing in obtaining a companion pass is everything! Now is the time to try and earn one, but keep in mind you must be strategic. I, myself, have acquired a companion pass annually since 2020 and just recently renewed ours for 2024. We have not paid cash for an airline ticket since the beginning of this journey and I like to always tell people that âWhen you donât pay for airfare, the way you travel changes!â Why? Because the cost of airfare is one of your biggest expenses! What if you could take your everyday spending and acquire points that could be used towards airline tickets? It is absolutely possible, and I will walk you through the basics.
The Companion Pass is good for the year you earn it and the following year; if you earn the pass in December of 2023, it will expire at the end of 2024. Early birds who earn it in February 2024, will have until the end of 2025. With that being said, you would want to make sure you meet the spend qualifications in 2024 and not in 2023.
For starters, the points requirement to get a companion pass is 135,000 points. You will automatically get 10,000 points at the beginning of the year as a reward from Southwest . So, in essence, you will only need 125,000 points. The easiest and probably most beneficial way if you are a frequent Southwest traveler is to apply for 2 of their credit cards: Southwest Personnel and Southwest business. I have included referral links for both below.
Personal promotion 75,000 points with a $3,000 spend in the first 3 months of opening.

NOW HERE ARE THE RULES, BECAUSE TIMING IS EVERYTHING!
Rules:
1. The calendar year is an important stipulation. The clock will reset on Jan. 1,2024 meaning any progress made in 2023 wonât count towards 2024.
2. Once approved, spend in 2024.
- Yes, waiting until 2024 is the safest way to ensure you receive all of your points with no issues. Remember rule number 1.
- Be strategic as you have 90 days to meet your spend.
- Try not to create new debt but use the card to pay for existing expenses. (Insurance, taxes, utilities, groceries, etc.)
- Look at what you spend on a monthly basis and ask yourself, âIf I can put it on a credit card.â
3. Most importantly PAY OFF YOUR DEBT!! This is a strategic operation, and the goal is to pay off the expenses on a monthly basis.
4. DO NOT open an authorized user card!!! Only you should be on the card. Therefore, when it is time to renew your companion pass, the second person would be able to use the same strategy.
It is important that you remember that you have 90 days from your approval in order to make your spend. Therefore, if you do not have any big spending needs in the next few months, you may just want to apply for 1 card at a time. Starting 2024 you will have all year to meet the 135,000 points requirement and one thing about Southwest, they love a good points promotion. So, take your time, be strategic, and plan to have fun!
There is a lot more to this process, so I am including a link to the business that helped me to get started in my points game. This guide will provide you with more details about this Companion Pass journey!

Thanks and Happy Traveling!
