One of our kiddos was stricken with the worst stomach flu Tuesday night. We were ALL up 9 times (who was counting? ALL of us!🤣) during the night and yesterday I felt like a mom of newborn babies all over again! Yesterday was better but he had a fever and slept on and off most of the day.

Fast forward to last night…. Just as I was drifting off to sleep he appeared at my bedside. He was speaking nonsense and not acting like himself. I guided him back upstairs (yep he navigated the stairs all on his own during this episode), tucked him in and left. Then my husband and I proceeded to not sleep (again) checked on him a million times… we were nervous he would attempt the stairs again!

Luckily I knew right away that this was sleep walking and why it had occurred. I figured many parents might not know so I created this post.

I sleep walked once as a child and it turns out about 30% of kids will experience this and 18% of people in general.

For toddlers and young children, sometimes long naps can really throw a wrench into your bedtime routine. Many kiddos drop their nap too early because parents find the nap makes bedtime so much harder. But many parents don’t have an understanding of how much time their child needs to build up enough sleep pressure to make falling asleep at bedtime easier.

Starting around 2 years old, most kids need 6 hours between the end of their nap and bedtime. So if the nap is lasting too long or drifting too late it can really push bedtime pretty late too.
😴
You want to have a cut off time for the nap so that bedtime can happen at a pretty regular and reasonable time each night.
😴
Many times undesirable bedtime behaviors develop in response to a bedtime that’s too early. Fixing the timing can help, though if those behaviors have been happening for a while you might need some additional interventions too!

How much sleep does your toddler/young child need? Of course every child’s specific needs may vary but this chart is a great starting point.

If you aren’t sure whether or not your child is getting enough sleep, take a closer look at their mood at the end of the day around 5 PM. Are they calm, able to focus, able to move through your routines easily? If yes, they’re most likely getting enough sleep. If, however they’re moody, unusually inattentive, and having more trouble with transitions they may need a little more sleep!

Teaching and maintaining healthy sleep habits to your little ones shouldn’t feel like all rules and no connection. Aside from having a super connecting bedtime routine, it’s just as important to have a super connecting morning routine too.
😴
Even if they popped out of bed more than once last night or had difficulty calming their body at bedtime, tell them how much you missed them all night. You know they missed you, so let them know it’s normal to miss the people we love the most when it’s time to close our eyes for the night.

It only takes a minute to use one of these phrases. Add in a nice warm hug and I’d say that’s a pretty awesome way to start your day.

I hope you all had the best Thanksgiving break! I want to thank each and every one of you for being here and supporting this small business I started over 5 years ago! Whether you chose me to help your family with sleep, have referred me to your friends, or shared or liked my posts, it all matters and I see and appreciate you!

Although I run Happy Littles technically all on my own, I couldn’t do it without all of the support I receive from friends and family. I take calls on the weekends and during our own bedtime routines, I write sleep plans early in the mornings before anyone else is awake, and I check sleep logs on family vacations. My husband is so supportive and picks up the slack whenever I need to step away…. He’s the best!

I love what I do and I hope to keep doing it for years to come! If you ever find yourself listening to a new parent struggling with sleep please let them know that there is help available. No matter your parenting style and beliefs around sleep there is a way to improve your sleep! And when we improve our sleep, we improve our health and that is worth it!
