Travelers are facing major disruptions at multiple airports nationwide as TSA staffing shortages worsen amid the ongoing partial government shutdown, which began on Feb. 14.

Many TSA employees are just days away from missing their first full paycheck, as Democrats and Republicans remain unable to agree on funding for the Department of Homeland Security.

Airlines are tightening baggage policies, and travelers are increasingly finding their carry-ons pulled at the gate — sometimes just steps from the plane door.

Dan Bubb, a former pilot, aviation historian and professor in residence with the University of Nevada Las Vegas Honors College, said gate agents may require passengers to check a roller bag even if it meets size requirements — particularly on smaller, regional jets where overhead space is limited.

Currently Puerto Vallarta is on lockdown! Airports closed and all flights cancelled, all roads in and out of resort closed. They are starting to lockdown Cancun.
If you’re in Mexico they are urging Americans to stay in their hotels.

The Cartels are retaliating and not sure for how long.

✈️ URGENT TRAVEL ALERT — JANUARY 4, 2026

Due to U.S. military strikes in Venezuela today and ongoing military activity, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued an emergency airspace restriction over Venezuela and nearby areas, including Curaçao. Commercial and private U.S. aircraft are not permitted to fly in that airspace right now because it’s unsafe for flight operations.

Because of this restriction and real-time operational changes:

🚫 Major U.S. airlines (American, United, Delta, JetBlue, Southwest) are canceling or altering flights across the Caribbean and northern South America.
🛫 European carriers and others are also experiencing delays and schedule disruptions due to reroutes.
🛑 Puerto Rico’s San Juan (SJU) has suspended most U.S. airline operations under the FAA directive.

With Cincinnati on the list of airports required to trim flights as of Nov. 7, passengers need to know their rights if their flight is canceled.

The Department of Transportation launched new rules last year stating that if your flight is canceled, airlines must offer you a refund promptly.

According to ABC News, the FAA announced it would decrease flight capacity by 10% at over 40 major airports across the country.

The report said flight reductions will start at 4% and work up to 10%, impacting flights scheduled between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m.
