That’s me…out on the trail in the Cairngorms on an absolutely beautiful October day.

I have a couple of days exploring on my own before my friend Erica joins me for a few days.

And yesterday I headed to RSPB Insh Marshes. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

📷 My 3-mile walk somehow took me more than two hours because I kept stopping to take photos. 😂

There are forest trails, wide-open views, lots of mushrooms and, as you can see behind me, plenty of heather.

I can only imagine what this landscape looks like in late summer when all that heather is in bloom. 💜

The marshes are known for their birdlife, too, with several hides where you can settle in and wait to see what appears.

There were some serious birders there with their binoculars and very impressive telescopes.

I suspect they were seeing things my eyes definitely were not.

More to come about this lovely area.

For now, I’m enjoying a little solo exploration and some beautiful autumn days in the Cairngorms.

What words should you learn before traveling somewhere where you don’t speak the language? 🤔

Margherita Berti of Italian Matters suggests starting with question words, polite words like please and thank you, and words related to what you’ll actually be doing.

🍽️ Going out to eat?

Learn a few restaurant words and phrases.

Visiting museums?

Think about what you might need to ask while you’re there.

🚆 Taking trains?

Learn some basic transportation words.

A little preparation can make it easier to actually USE the language once you arrive.

And you don’t need to speak it perfectly.

Just give it a try!

One of the things I love most about travel is experiencing those moments that stop you in your tracks.

But there’s something pretty special about being able to turn to someone else and say, “Wow. Are you seeing this?” 💛

That’s one of the things I’ve come to appreciate about small group travel — sharing the walks, the views, the laughs, the meals, and all those little moments along the way.

And yes, this independent, control-loving traveler has discovered there are some pretty fabulous benefits to traveling with a small group. 😉
