Inexistence.org

Inexistence.org Web Hosting, Web Design, ISP related features and functions. We at Inexistence.org strive to make your projects become exactly what you envision.

Inexistence.org was founded on April 16 2002, by two men who were tired of letting other people and companies control their voices and content. We have spent a lot of time making the server a enjoyable and powerful experience for all of our users and friends. We believe in standard compliancy and WYSIWYG (What you see is what you get). Every site we manage we attempt to assist the maintainers on u

sing the best coding practices. At times we will even do maintenance coding and audits for free or a very reduced cost. Thanks to our dedicated adminstration and development teams we usually have an exceptional uptime. Our standard response rate for client issues is also less than 24 hours. Our server is on a dedicated business class connection and happens to be in our main administrator’s house so hands on repair is never an issue.

Drive replacement completed, RAID1 rebuilt, all services are back up and running.

10/20/2017

Server will be going down at some point as 1&1 replaces a drive for us. We apologize for the downtime and hopefully it will be short. Thank you for your understanding.

08/10/2016

Server is currently down due to a hard drive failure. We are currently correcting the issue.

Debian 8.0 is officially installed as of now. Lots of changes to come as it adds a bunch of new features!

04/26/2015

We will be rolling to the new Debian 8.0 release shortly (on les) please excuse any issues that crop up as we work.

Distro Upgrade complete, all main services are up and running. We will be doing more work later on as well. More info will be posted as we go. Main admin is tired and wants to go to bed now. Wish him pleasant dreams!

12/29/2013

We are currently doing a distro upgrade, please excuse the dust while it is underway. If your site goes down or one of our services stops working trust that we are working on it and operations will resume as soon as possible.

06/18/2013

We are currently in the process of doing a huge data migration to our new server.

To all our users:
Expect a phone call or email in the coming days/weeks from us as we need to discuss the migration and what to expect in the future.

(It is looking bright!)

Power Outage followed by backbone outage today. Services have been restored... We will be taking steps to ensure this doesn't happen again as soon as we can. Over the coming month we will be transitioning to a co-location type service providing more internet connection backbones and power recovery options (generators / battery backups).

In case anyone has read this report and might be concerned, we did an internal audit on the possible files and they are clean.

The postmortem explaining service disruptions has been posted by CloudFlare. This took down pretty much all of our hosted sites, thankfully they had their services back up in less than an hour.

Welcome to the CloudFlare blog. CloudFlare provides performance and security for any website. Hundreds of thousands of websites use CloudFlare. To learn more, please visit our website.

Just a note to all hosted WordPress site owners you are safe from this as we know how to configure things properly. Directory indexes are not allowed and dbcaches are done with APC (not disk mode which is exploitable). Any sites we help manage this will also not apply to as dbcache is disabled on most third party servers due to bugs with their hosting.

chicksdaddy writes in with a warning about a popular Wordpress plugin. "A security researcher is warning WordPress users that a popular plugin may leave sensitive information from their blog accessible from the public Internet with little more than a Google search. So thanks to Slashdot this evening I became aware of a leap second bug in the kernel.

I have since implemented a newer kernel release (thanks to Debian Backports) we went from 2.6.26-2-amd64 to 3.2.0-0.bpo.2-amd64.
I would declare this currently a testing install (haven't set this kernel to the default boot kernel yet).

I have also disabled NTP for the time being until tomorrow to make sure we don't have a kernel panic.

If you notice the server go down at all please rest assured that I'm working on it and will have it back up quickly.
If it doesn't come up quickly feel free to drop a message here and I'll try to respond to it as quick as I can.

Tmack writes "The last time we had a leap second, sysadmins were taken a bit by surprise when a random smattering of systems locked up (including Slashdot itself) due to a kernel bug causing a race condition specific to the way leap seconds are handled/notified by ntp. The vulnerable kernel versions...

Resolved the GMail issues tonight:

So if anyone has been having issues emailing to gmail users lately I finally found out why. OpenDNS apparently is having kittens doing proper resolves for any of it.

Move seems to be going pretty well. We have more work to do as far as setting up fall over and other things but sites and email should be working for the most part. Sites especially going through cloudflare should be live right now. Email may take a bit longer to catch up as that doesn't run through cloudflare. More to come soon...

Ok business class cable has been installed. The server will be moving this monday and then there's the standard 24 / 48 for propagating across the internet as our ip address will change. So expect down time for that period.

01/25/2012

So after waiting all day we discover that the phone (digital phone from Time Warner) wasn't working and apparently the install tech knocked on the front door (try ringing doorbells folks doesn't hurt to at least _try_ them). So install tech is coming Friday between 8am and 5pm. So scheduled downtime will be then instead of today/tomorrow.
