After more than 6,000 dives and organizing trips around the world, I’ve learned that great scuba travel isn’t just about what’s underwater.

Here is one key thing I wish more divers knew before they packed their bags and booked a flight.

Timing is EVERYTHING — and no, just dodging hurricane season isn’t enough. The ocean’s got its own calendar. Want hammerheads, whale sharks, or mantas? You’ve gotta show up when they do. Pick the wrong week and you’ll be diving in split pea soup wondering where the party went.
