One of the most beloved private island destinations in cruising just got the biggest makeover it has seen in three decades — and it changes the game for Carnival passengers.
Carnival Cruise Line has officially unveiled the completed enhancements at RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay (formerly Half Moon Cay), the private Bahamian island that has been a fixture on Carnival itineraries for years. The grand opening took place on June 1, 2026, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by Carnival Cruise Line President Christine Duffy.
Here's what's new at RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay:
🔹 A brand-new deep-water pier — the FIRST in the destination's nearly 30-year history
🔹 The pier allows Carnival's biggest ships (Excel-class — Mardi Gras, Carnival Celebration, Carnival Jubilee) to dock directly
🔹 Expanded beachfront — over one mile of white-sand coastline now available
🔹 Five brand-new dining and beverage venues:
- Orchid Beach Grill
- Hibiscus Beach Grill
- Luna Tide Beach Bar
- Stay Awhile Beach Shack
- Lil' Tiki Bar
🔹 New island-wide tram service connecting all areas
🔹 New scenic Papaya Pathway walking route
🔹 Additional reservable cabanas and daybeds
🔹 Free loungers and umbrellas across the beach
Why the new pier is the centerpiece of this entire project:
🔹 For decades, guests reached Half Moon Cay by tender boats — small ferries
🔹 Tendering meant longer wait times, weather-related cancellations, and limited access for big ships
🔹 The Excel-class megaships physically couldn't dock there before — guests on the line's newest ships missed the destination
🔹 Direct docking eliminates the tender process entirely
🔹 More ships can now visit, more guests have access, and a major operational headache is gone
Some context on the island's history:
🔹 RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay has been welcoming cruise ships since 1997
🔹 The 2,400-acre Bahamian island was originally leased and operated by Holland America Line
🔹 When Carnival Corp. acquired Holland America in 1989, the destination became shared
🔹 Carnival and Holland America jointly invested in the renovations
🔹 The north side of the island is dedicated to Carnival; the south side remains for Holland America passengers
🔹 The first ship to use the new pier was Carnival Sunrise on June 1
🔹 Additional Carnival ships are visiting in the days following the opening
Why this matters in the bigger picture:
🔹 Carnival is in the middle of a major private destination push
🔹 Celebration Key in the Bahamas just opened in 2025 — another massive Carnival investment
🔹 Royal Caribbean has Perfect Day at CocoCay (with Mexico now off the table)
🔹 Disney has Castaway Cay and Lookout Cay
🔹 MSC has Ocean Cay
🔹 Norwegian's Great Tides Waterpark opens September 4, 2026 at Great Stirrup Cay
The cruise line private destination arms race continues — and Carnival just made a major upgrade to a 30-year-old destination instead of building new from scratch. Smart move.
For cruisers, the bottom line is straightforward:
🔹 If you're sailing Carnival to RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay in 2026 or later, the experience is dramatically better than it was just months ago
🔹 More dining options, more shade, more amenities, easier access
🔹 The new dining venues are complimentary (included in your cruise fare)
🔹 Reservable cabanas and daybeds are paid upgrades — book them early on popular sail dates
🔹 If you've been to Half Moon Cay before, the south side still has the same "secluded paradise" feel
