According to Imperial College London neuroscience professor Paul Edison, the brain protective effects of semaglutide and other GLP-1 drugs are about more than just weight loss. Edison explains that there are multiple cell types in the brain to which these drugs are capable of binding, and animal studies suggest that they’re capable of removing toxic proteins and stimulating neurons to repair themselves.

“We think it’s quite a neuroprotective drug,” says Edison. “It seems to activate different cascades of enzymes, and that reduces inflammation and eventually increases memory.”

As one reads articles, such as this one, it highlights even more the importance of the ever-expanding data around how GLP-1s could be useful in addressing addictions. Additionally, it would stand to reason that a treatment option such as a commercially available tablet or a compounded sublingual version in SubMagna® HMW could be of even more importance in a patient population that the avoidance of needles is typically a focal point as well. From a review of the patents held by this manufacturer surrounding TIRZEPATIDE and upcoming changes to the FDA-Shortage-List, this action is not surprising as it relates to the compounding of TIRZEPATIDE from bulk API (active pharmaceutical ingredient). Even if a pharmacy is "adding something to" the TIRZEPATIDE, it does not appear that doing so negates the massive patent portfolio that the manufacturer has related to the drug itself.

Eli Lilly is suing Strive Pharmacy and Empower Pharmacy for compounding tirzepatide, the active ingredient in Zepbound and Mounjaro.
