Travel Log: Covent Gardens, London, England, February, 2026
Walking through London, even on a rainy day meant that our eyes never stopped moving, our feet got sore, but we still wanted to see what was around the next corner, and excitement over the littlest things.
Covent Garden is now full of upscale stores and boutiques, but at one time, it was farmland owned by Westminster Abbey. By 1654, a fruit & vegetable market was developing there, and in 1670, it was officially restricted to fruits, flowers, roots, and herbs. It became the center for buying fresh produce.
In the 1700’s, it became not only the theater and entertainment center, but also notorious for coffee houses, brothels, and taverns. (My Fair Lady was partially set in Covent Garden)
In the 20th century, the market was relocated and the area was redeveloped as a cultural center of the city.
