We’ve visited Mexico several times and always felt safe!
RP *TRAVEL SAFETY* [Save & Share] One thing that's often missing in discussions about safety in Mexico (or any country for that matter) is CONTEXT. For example, while the murder rate in Mexico is higher than it's ever been, it's almost entirely related to drug trafficking. Which means that, as a tourist, the likelihood of you getting caught in the crosshairs and being a victim is slim to none.

Real talk, there’s probably a greater chance of you getting shot in Chicago or Los Angeles than in Cancun these days…🤷🏾♀️ Gun violence and mass shootings occur almost DAILY in the USA, yet some folks want to get on their soapbox and paint all of Mexico as a violent country filled with criminals.

Also take into consideration that Mexico is a huge country (the 13th largest in the world in terms of land mass) and that drug violence is highly regionalized and mostly restricted to the border states. Thus to act like all of Mexico is riddled with violent crime is silly. I mean, corruption (i.e. bribery) is an issue. But unless you’re involved in illegal/illicit activity, violent crime is not likely to be a problem for you any more than it would be in the USA.

My larger point? BIAS against countries where locals are primarily BLACK and BROWN is real, and it's usually from people who have never been there themselves. My advice when doing your intel about Mexico travel: talk to people on the ground or experienced travelers who have been recently.
