The Green Sheep Studio

The Green Sheep Studio The Green Sheep designs and makes unique and custom-ordered wool blankets from felted, upcycled wool I was captivated.

While the spirited pace of modern life can be a lot of fun, everyone needs some down time. Each blanket from The Green Sheep offers a restful spot to slow the momentum for a bit, cuddle up, and enjoy the lull. The Green Sheep began in 2009 after I got my first taste of working with felted wool. The wool’s rich color, deep texture, drape and softness — they were all a surprise to me. In my studio a

t The Green Sheep, I design and make blankets (and occasional other items) from upcycled, felted wool – usually wool sweaters. Most 100% wools after being felted will not fray when cut. I do leave the seam edges raw on the backs of my blankets. It’s similar to having seams on the inside of clothing. The inspiration for the blankets comes from many sources: fondness for a particular time or place, memories of a loved one (the Legacy Blankets), a sensation, a photograph, even a conversation. Each blanket has a story, whether from my own life or someone else’s. And each viewer brings a story to the mix too, as they discover that a blanket reminds them of their own place or feeling or fondness for something. Let me take care of the "Notice" part of the title right off. I've chosen to rest for awhile from tending The Green Sheep as a business. I'll put my Etsy shop into vacation mode next week, for an undetermined amount of time. I am not taking new commissions for blankets for now. I'll continue to sew. I especially will be attentive to the sweet but reticent muse that can surprisingly move me to dream about a blanket....

My blanket-making pace has necessarily slowed with growing commitments in my life. (I'm currently out West helping my precious momma with things that are increasingly difficult for her.) Life is beautiful, complex, and ever-changing, right?! I'm extremely grateful. When there is a blanket in the mix, I am extra happy. Here's the latest...!

Our bright and beautiful world welcomed a new little one in July! Baby Selene joined her parents, a sister and brother …and a pretty fun group of neighbors who decided to celebrate her arrival with a baby blanket. And more: In true Chinese fashion (going back to the year 960!) Selene’s grandmoth...

Four months ago (a week after my post just prior to this one), my husband and I drove to Michigan from Illinois to look at a house that had popped up on Zillow. The next day we placed a bid on the house and had it accepted. A month later we sold our own house. And a month after that, just before Christmas, we, with all our earthly belongings in tow, returned to Michigan after 22 years away....

In these months of living in slow motion, I have finished a blanket (finally!) in time for a June birthday. This is "Keep to the River." It's been an emotional blanket for me to make--and to let go of in the end. As always, there's a story behind it. Click below to read it :)

Oh, my heart. Back in February, when our days were more ordinary than they are now, my friend and colleague, Sara, contacted me about a blanket for her dad’s June birthday as a gift from her sisters and her. I trimmed the binding last week, in the nick of time, and mourned when I sent … Continue...

Amid many rainy days, we have had some spring beauties: clear, warm and sunny. To my mind, there's no better place to work with wool than in lucid sunlight, where color and texture come alive together. A recent day like that beckoned me to cut the sweaters for a custom-order blanket I've been sketching out. The late-afternoon slant of the sun set such a tranquil mood that I wanted to share some photos. [ 191 more words ]

[Don’t forget: During the coronavirus shutdown, the Wool Blanket Master Class is open for enrollment. It’s a work-at-your-own-pace video course with clear instructions and access to me for questions and feedback. Check it out here. Questions about it? Write me a note here.] Amid many rainy days,...

Gosh, you guys. How the heck are you? Two months and so much naivete ago, I wrote about having a "luscious lull" near the end of winter in which to tackle projects. What in the world?? I knew nothing of what was about to hit, and my mind is now officially blown. Wiser and more thoughtful voices can inform the internet about the complexities of our current situation. Over the last several months, I've had quite a few people ask me to share how I store the felted wool sweaters that become the palette with which I create blankets. I might be a little unusual in how I choose to do this, but if you're interested, click the photo to read more. If you've got ideas of your own, please share them!

Living in the Midwest, this time of year always feels to me like a big gift: The cold, the winter, the lure of the indoors provides a luscious lull for doing projects. (The Luscious Lull! I may coin that.) In previous winters/early springs, in addition to working on many, many blankets, I also… le...

Ahhh, my final blog post for 2019! This one is a bundle of THREE legacy blankets for a woman and her 2 sons, made from over 2 dozen sweaters that had been saved over a lifetime. So much history represented, right in these blankets!

I’ve got one final post for 2019! Admittedly, I’ve created a much quieter year online for myself. But I’m so happy to still be here, peacefully plodding away (haha! it’s true!) at making and then recording the things that come about. My large and final project for this year was a custom orde...

It's packing and shipping time for Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes! I really wish I had brought this up earlier, just in case anyone else's wheels needed greasing to get rolling.

I say that because MY wheels needed exactly that. I had not *planned* on sewing a blanket for a shoebox this year. But a friend innocently nudged me in a different direction when, during an announcement at church about an Operation Christmas Child packing party, she tapped me on the shoulder and whispered, "Are you making a blanket?" I whispered back, "Not this year..." but then couldn't stop thinking about another sweet blanket.
