As we head into summer and spend more time on the water, it's crucial to remember the importance of respecting wake zones. These designated areas aren't just random markers -- they play a vital role in ensuring safety and preserving our waterways. Here's a quick guide to help you understand the differences:

⛔“𝗜𝗱𝗹𝗲 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗲𝗱, 𝗡𝗼 𝗪𝗮𝗸𝗲” 𝗭𝗼𝗻𝗲 : A designated area where vessels must be operated at a speed no greater than that which is necessary to maintain steerage and headway. The vessel should not produce a wake at this speed.

🐢“𝗦𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗲𝗱, 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗺𝘂𝗺 𝗪𝗮𝗸𝗲” 𝗭𝗼𝗻𝗲 : Areas where vessels must be fully off plane and completely settled in the water. Any wake created by a vessel in one of these zones must be minimal (very small).

🚤𝗠𝗮𝘅𝗶𝗺𝘂𝗺 𝟮𝟱 𝗠𝗣𝗛, 𝟯𝟬 𝗠𝗣𝗛, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝟯𝟱 𝗠𝗣𝗛 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗭𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀 : Controlled areas within which a vessel must not exceed posted speed.

🚫𝗩𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗹 𝗘𝘅𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗔𝗿𝗲𝗮 : An area marked with a vertical diamond shape with a cross in the center that indicates all vessels or certain classes of vessels are excluded from the area.

Which trail will you choose to walk today, National Trails Day 2024? The trails of the Crystal River State Parks vary from the Seven Mile Loop (a designated National Recreation Trail which you can add to by using the new connector trail to the 2.2 mile Eco-Walk Trail), to the short, paved, interpretive walk around the Yulee Sugar Mill Ruins. Crystal Cove, Redfish Hole, Churchhouse Hammock, the Archaeological Park interp trail, and Lakeside Trails round out the trail selection - and all are unique, scenic, and fun!

Whatever trail you choose, be sure to wear appropriate shoes, protect yourself from insects and sun, and bring a snack and some water. It's HOT out there, so stay safe! Happy June! ~Heather
