This Ice Cream Sunday, make homemade ice cream in a press seal bag in 10! This recipe with a video can be found in the Dairy Spot: Discovery Center. Let us know if you make it and how it turned out. 🍨

🧂 Fun fact: Salt helps the fat and sugar in milk freeze and harden by lowering the freezing point, so it's a necessary ingredient making ice cream.

Here’s what you will need:
1 gallon size press seal bag (not the zipper kind)
1 quart size press seal bag (not the zipper kind)
Measuring spoons
Two bowls
Whole milk
White sugar
Vanilla extract
Half & Half
Rock salt
Ice (crushed)

1. Measure out ½ cup of whole milk. Whole milk works best. Pour the milk in one of the bowls.

2. Measure ½ cup of half & half and add to the milk.

3. Measure ¼ cup of white sugar and add to the milk and half & half.

4. Add ½ teaspoon of vanilla extract to the sugar, milk, and half & half. Mix it very well with a spoon so that the sugar dissolves into the milk mixture.

5. Place the quart-size press seal bag in the second bowl. Open it up nice and wide.

6. Pour the milk mixture into the bag. Close the bag halfway, squeeze out most of the air in the bag, and quickly close the rest of the bag until it is completely sealed.

7. Add a couple of handfuls of crushed ice to the 1-gallon press seal bag. Crushed ice will wrap around the milk mixture bag better.

8. Add ½ cup of rock salt to the ice. The salt is important when you make ice cream. You need to get the milk mixture cold enough to freeze.

9. Place the milk-mixture bag inside the ice and salt bag.

10. Add more ice and the rest of the salt to the outer bag (not the milk mixture bag) so that ice surrounds the milk mixture bag. Close the bag halfway, squeeze out most of the air in the bag, and quickly close the rest of the bag until it is completely sealed.

11. Wrap the bag in a towel so your hands don’t freeze. Shake your bag for about 5 minutes or until it turns into ice cream.

12. Add your favorite flavorings like chocolate chips or fruit to the milk mixture before you freeze for other flavors.

Now, grab a spoon and enjoy your ice cream straight from the bag!

🌙 July 21: Moon Meets Venus in the Morning Sky! 🌟

Set your alarm early — on July 21, just before sunrise, the crescent Moon (16% illuminated) will shine close to dazzling Venus (mag -4.0) in the constellation Ta**us. You don’t need a telescope, both the Moon and Venus will be easily visible to the naked eye in the eastern sky!

And there’s more: nearby you’ll find the beautiful Pleiades star cluster (mag 1.2), also known as the Seven Sisters. You may need binoculars to spot it clearly, but it’s worth the try!

📍 Where to look: East, in Ta**us
🕓 When: Before sunrise
