Set some time aside for a little ghost hunting on July 4th.
Cumberland Historic Ghost Tours will present a one-hour walking tour of Washington Street on Saturday, July 4th. The tour will begin in front of the Washington Street Library at 7 PM where tickets will be available immediately before the tour from guides in historic costumes. Tickets are $8 for adults and $4 for students. The tour will include architectural features of the buildings as well as historic information as they pertain to the specters. Ghosts have been part of Cumberland’s history from the 1700’s through modern days. According to guide Anne Potts, “Sometimes our team of researchers have been able to identify the apparition, but others remain a mystery for now. Clues to the specific identity usually involve a tragedy or unresolved acts of injustice.” All proceeds from the tour are donated to local charities. For more information, call 301-777-9140.

In 1777 the Continental Congress adopted the Stars and Stripes as the official flag of the United States.

The holiday gained momentum in the late 1800s through patriotic celebrations in schools and communities. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation recognizing Flag Day, and in 1949, Congress officially established June 14 as National Flag Day.

Today, Flag Day is a time to reflect on the history, unity, and ideals represented by the American flag.

Lets Celebrate our brewing history in Allegany County and Maryland. Our Beer Garden on July 4th will feature two local favorites Old German and Natty Boh. Come out and raise a glass to America. Cheers! 🍻

🍺 Old German was originally brewed by the German Brewing Company, founded in Cumberland in 1901 along Wills Creek near Market Street. Following Prohibition, the brewery resumed beer production in 1933, and Old German became its flagship brand. During World War II, anti-German sentiment led the company to rename itself Queen City Brewing Company, but the Old German brand remained popular. it became a regional favorite known for its smooth, easy-drinking lager style and distinctive slogan, “From the Land of Pleasant Living.”

🍺 National Bohemian (“Natty Boh”) was introduced by Baltimore’s National Brewing Company in 1885 and grew into one of Maryland’s most iconic beers. Recognizable by its one-eyed mascot, Mr. Boh, the brand became deeply tied to Baltimore’s blue-collar and baseball culture, remaining a beloved local symbol long after brewing operations left the city.

The history of Allegany County, Maryland is deeply tied to the iron rails of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad — America’s first common carrier railroad. 🚂

Founded in 1827, the B&O Railroad helped transform Cumberland into one of the most important transportation and industrial centers in the region. As the railroad expanded westward through the mountains of Western Maryland, Allegany County became a vital link connecting the East Coast to the Ohio Valley and the growing American frontier.

Cumberland soon developed into a booming railroad town filled with rail yards, machine shops, roundhouses, and depots. Thousands of local residents worked for the railroad as engineers, conductors, machinists, laborers, and telegraph operators. The B&O also worked closely with the coal industry, transporting Allegany County coal to cities and industries across the nation.

The railroad changed everyday life in Western Maryland by bringing jobs, commerce, travel, and new opportunities to the region. Passenger trains carried travelers through the mountains while freight trains hauled coal, lumber, and manufactured goods across America.

Today, the legacy of the B&O Railroad can still be seen throughout Allegany County in its historic stations, tunnels, rail lines, and museums that preserve the story of the railroad that helped build Cumberland and shape the future of the nation. 🚂❤️
