These chairs at Disney’s BoardWalk Resort are straight out of a whimsical fever dream—but did you know they have a fascinating history?

These wonderfully bizarre (and slightly creepy) seats are called nanny chairs! Originating in 19th-century Europe, nanny chairs were placed directly on carousel platforms. They were designed for nannies or parents to sit on—fixed in place so they didn’t move up and down like the horses—allowing them to supervise children while still being part of the ride.

These eerie replicas were created by Disney to match the BoardWalk’s turn-of-the-century Atlantic City theme—though their unsettling stare fits in almost too well.
