Today we arrived in Akureyri to a very foggy port. It seemed the clouds were very low and it would be a cloudy, foggy day. We decided not to do a tour, so we rented a car and just drive around the area to see the hot spots without 40 other people on a tour.
First stop was breakfast at Lyst, which is a small Cafe / coffee shop in the botanical garden. After that we took off for Grjótagjá lava cave. It used to be a small pool that was used fir bathing, but a volcanic eruption covered it up and left a small opening to crawl through. The water pool inside was a bright blue.
We then went to lunch at Vogafjoss Farm Resort. It is a working farm with a small restaurant. Great food and beer.
Off to a geo-thermal area at Hverir Hot Springs. Not the kind of hot springs that you want to swim in. There are several vents off gassing and the smell of Sulphur was incredible and hard to breath.
We then went to one of the popular waterfalls in Iceland at Godafoss Waterfall. The power of the rushing water was amazing.
