Newgrange 3200 B.C. Ireland | The winter solstice sun shines through the top of this Stone Age structure and onto the floor of the internal chamber on approximately four days each year, illuminating the ancient temple for about 17 minutes. Newgrange, which was constructed before Stonehenge, was probably used to track the passage of time with an accuracy that was well ahead of its time. The interior of Newgrange features a stone structure that forms chambers and tunnels, suggesting that in addition to being a finely built clock, the site also likely served as a ritual site and a passage tomb.

The Nubian pyramids, dating back to around 700 BC, serve as a captivating testament to the ancient Kingdom of Kush, which thrived in what is now Sudan. These pyramids were the final resting places of Kush*te royalty and nobles, showcasing a unique blend of Egyptian and indigenous Nubian influences. The submerged Cleopatra's Palace off the coast of Alexandria, Egypt, was discovered in the late 1990s by a team of underwater archaeologists led by French marine archaeologist Franck Goddio. This underwater archaeological site dates back to the Ptolemaic period in ancient Egypt, approximately 2,000 years ago, during the reign of Cleopatra VII, who ruled from 51 BC to 30 BC.

The discovery of Cleopatra's Palace underwater was a significant find that shed light on the grandeur and sophistication of Hellenistic art and architecture during Cleopatra's time. The ruins include well-preserved statues, columns, coins, jewelry, pottery, and other artifacts that provide valuable insights into the history, culture, and daily life of ancient Egypt during the Ptolemaic period.

Various theories suggest that natural factors such as earthquakes, subsidence, rising sea levels, or even a tsunami could have contributed to the submergence of Cleopatra's Palace and other parts of ancient Alexandria. The underwater excavations at the site have yielded a treasure trove of artifacts that have helped archaeologists and historians better understand the world of ancient Egypt and the legacy of Cleopatra VII, the last active ruler of the Ptolemaic Kingdom of Egypt.

Last weekend my cousin was visiting from Chicago so I took her around to do some touristy stuff in the Verde Valley. One of our stops—because she was interested in ancient rock art—was the Crane Petroglyph Site. Formerly known as the V-Bar-V Heritage Site, this is the largest collection of petroglyphs in the Verde Valley. More than 1,000 petroglyphs are carved into the cliff face on what was once the V-Bar-V Ranch. Stories are told here, mostly distant echoes from the Southern Sinagua. Two weeks ago, following a Hopi name changing ceremony, the forest service rechristened this special place as the Crane Petroglyph Site. You’ll need a Red Rock Pass or America the Beautiful Pass and from the visitor center it’s a short easy walk back to the site, where a docent points out individual figures and clustered carvings, discussing their significance. I’ve been visiting this ancient gallery for many years, even when it was very rustic. It’s nice to see the site preserved so it can be enjoyed by future generations. It’s located just a couple of miles down Forest Road 618, (just off 1-17) near Beaver Creek. Well worth a visit this spring. It’s always important to stay connected to the past.

3500 year old Minoan Road, the oldest road in Europe.
This incredibly ancient road stretches for 50 km (31 miles) from Knossos in Crete, Greece, through the mountains to Gortyn and Lebena.
The road had side drains, a 200 mm (8-inch) thick pavement of sandstone blocks bound with clay-gypsum mortar, covered by a layer of basaltic flagstones and had separate shoulders.
