How do you choose among Maldives resorts that all promise blue water and overwater villas? Start with personality.

Joali is the memorable one. Where other resorts hang a few prints, Joali suspended a life-size manta ray in the trees and put a dining table inside it. Where others plant coral frames, Joali sank sculptures on the reef and let the coral move in. Even the butlers refuse to be ordinary here. The title is Jadugar, which translates to magician.

Beneath the character, the fundamentals are flawless: Forbes Five-Star four years running, two Michelin Keys, and a top-three finish in Travel + Leisure's World's Best Hotels this year.

Anyone can promise paradise. Personality is rarer. Reach out to start planning.

Chileno Bay is one of the few resorts I book twice for the same clients: once for the honeymoon, and again a few years later when the kids come along.

It works both times for the same reasons. The resort fronts a protected cove with calm, clear water and coral just off the sand, with paddleboards and snorkel gear waiting at the beach. Glass-walled rooms and villas keep the view everywhere you look, and a three-tier pool spills down toward the water.

Guests rave about Comal, where Baja-Mediterranean dinners arrive with the sunset, but it's TnT, the casual taco-and-tequila spot, that you shouldn't leave without trying.

Advisor tip: if you visit in winter, watch the horizon at breakfast for gray whales passing through.

This is the Cabo resort my clients grow up with. Reach out to start planning.

A shift I’ve noticed in this fall’s bookings: clients are choosing the culture first and the destination second.

Seeing the landmark is easy. Understanding what you are looking at is the part that changes the trip. A temple ceremony in Bali, a festival in Mexico, and a market or fortified village in Morocco each ask something different of the traveler. Timing, local context, etiquette, and the right guide turn a colorful stop into an experience that makes sense.

This is why cultural travel cannot be reduced to a list of famous places. I plan around what is happening, how clients want to participate, and how much time the destination deserves. Some days need a guide. Others need a free afternoon after the introduction.

If there’s an art form, a tradition, or an era you love, that’s a trip. Tell me what moves you, and I’ll start planning.

Here’s a piece of hotel trivia I love sharing with clients: Ritz-Carlton has around 100 hotels worldwide. Fewer than ten carry the word Reserve. Zadún is one of them.

The Reserve designation is the brand’s most exclusive tier, and it changes the experience completely. At Zadún, in San José del Cabo, that means villa-style rooms built into the desert dunes above the Sea of Cortez, a personal host assigned to your stay, and a pace that feels nothing like a big resort.

The spa, Alkemia, is a destination on its own, and dinner at Humo, the wood-fire restaurant, is one of the best meals in Los Cabos.

Advisor tip: winter brings whales right offshore, and this stretch of coast near Puerto Los Cabos is calmer than the Cabo San Lucas end. Reach out to learn more.

Want three trips for the price of one flight? That’s Thailand.

Bangkok first: rooftop dinners, riverside hotels, street food that outperforms restaurants triple the price.

Then north to Chiang Mai for temples, artisan villages, and ethical elephant encounters in the hills.

Then the islands. Powder beaches, limestone cliffs rising out of green water, and some of the best beach resorts in Asia.

The routing between regions is where a trip gets made or broken. That’s my job. If Thailand is on your list, message me.

The whole family, one roof, zero hotel hallways. Private villas are how my favorite families do the festive season, and the best ones are booking right now.

A villa solves what hotels can't for multi-generational trips: everyone together under one roof, a private chef instead of restaurant reservations for twelve, space for the grandparents to nap and the kids to run.

Where I'm sending families this year: jungle villas in Costa Rica with monkeys in the trees, catered chalets in the Alps with ski-in access, staffed oceanfront estates in Cabo, villa compounds in Hawaii where three generations can spread out, and private safari villas in South Africa with their own guide and vehicle.

Festive villas require the longest lead time of anything I book. The question worth asking at the dinner table this month: where does the whole family want to wake up this holiday season?

Did you know one of Africa's greatest safaris happens almost entirely on water?

Eagle Island Lodge, a Belmond property, occupies a private island deep in the Okavango Delta, one of the most remarkable ecosystems on Earth: a desert that floods every year into a maze of channels, lagoons, and islands teeming with wildlife.

The safari itself is unlike anywhere else in Africa. Gliding through the reeds in a mokoro, the traditional dugout canoe. Boat safaris through papyrus channels. And the lodge's signature: helicopter flights over the Delta with the doors off, which clients consistently call the highlight of their entire trip.

Water, wildlife, and almost no one else around. Reach out to start planning.

Planning Portugal and only thinking about Lisbon? Allow me to make the case for the north.

Porto is one of Europe’s great second cities, and Infante Sagres is its grande dame.

Opened in 1951 as the city’s first luxury hotel, it has hosted royalty, heads of state, and film stars ever since. The stained-glass staircase alone is worth walking up and down twice.

The location is the other reason I book it: you’re in the heart of downtown, an easy walk to Livraria Lello, the Ribeira riverfront, and the port wine lodges across the river in Gaia.

Insider tip: pair Porto with the Douro Valley, about 90 minutes away, for wine country after the city. Reach out to start planning.

Want the Tuscany you’ve seen in the movies, without a single tour bus in sight? I know exactly where to send you.

Borgo Santo Pietro is a restored 13th-century villa in the Val di Merse, south of Siena, surrounded by 300 acres of organic farmland, gardens, and vineyards. Nearly everything on your plate comes off that land, and the estate even produces its own skincare line, Seed to Skin, used throughout the spa.

My favorite afternoon here: a short drive to the Abbey of San Galgano, where a real sword in the stone has been embedded in rock for 800 years.

Twelve guest rooms, one working farm, zero crowds. This is the Tuscany clients ask me to find. Reach out, and I’ll plan it.
