Gourd Banjos by Barry This is all about my Gourd Banjo instruments, 5 string Banjos , Banjolele (gourd Ukulele) and Monjos My banjos are made from hard shell gourds grown in Arizona.

The gourd banjo is a decendant of the African Akonting a primitive banjo that was brought to the US in the early 1800's. Slave on plantation slowly started making similar instruments from what they could find on plantations..thus the gourd banjo. I approach building these wonderful instruments from a luthiers poit of view but also and artist / sculptures poit of view to not only make a very funct

ional acoustic instrument but an organic sculpture that could hang on a wall. Three different styles of banjos are available, the Gourd 5 string, Banjolele Uke 4 strings and the Monjo a 1 string Gourd banjo. The latest #531 Radical 5 string fretless Gourd banjo. I have never done a finish quite like this, but I like it. Small 8" kettle gourd but big sound and kolrosing on the bridge. Kolrosing is wood tattooing where cuts are made with a sharp knife then the cuts are filled with finely ground coffee or cinnamon then seal with a finish like oil or poly.
