Thought I should share this could save a babies life. Allowing a baby to share a bed with someone else drives up the risk of sudden infant death, warns Dr. Marc Siegel
Baby sleep dangers revealed in new study as nearly 70% of infant deaths were due to co-sleeping.
Allowing babies to sleep outside their cribs or dedicated solo sleep spaces can have life-threatening risks.
That’s according to a recent study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which was published in the medical journal Pediatrics.
Among infants who died suddenly, 59.5% were sleeping with someone else at the time.
Around 76% were sleeping in an adult bed and 68.2% were sharing a bed with an adult, the study found.
In 68.3% of the deaths, soft bedding was found in the sleeping area.
The researchers looked at more than 7,500 sudden unexpected infant deaths in 23 U.S. states between 2011 and 2020.

They evaluated the babies’ sleep environments, demographics and other characteristics.
Dr. Marc Siegel, clinical professor of medicine at NYU Langone Medical Center and a Fox News medical contributor, joined "Fox & Friends" this week to discuss the dangers associated with unsafe sleep habits.
While it may seem "natural" for a child to be in bed with a parent, especially among those who are new to parenting, these sleep arrangements can have tragic consequences, the doctor warned.
Of the 1,300 to 1,500 cases of SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome) each year, almost three-quarters of them were associated with a child sleeping in a bed with a parent, he pointed out.
Among the thousands of infants who died in 23 U.S. states between 2011 and 2020, nearly three-quarters of them were sharing a bed with an adult, the study found. (iStock)
"You know why? The surface isn’t firm enough," he said.
"When you sleep, you have a mattress you want to feel comfortable with — but in the crib, [it should be] a very firm mattress," he added.
"These are key issues — you don’t want to have your child sleeping on their stomach when they are very young."
No loose blankets, pillows, stuffed animals, plush toys, crib bumpers or other soft items should be placed in the child's sleep space, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. (iStock)
Previous studies have shown that SIDS has something to do with the way the baby is exchanging oxygen and carbon dioxide, Siegel noted.
"It’s also related to what you do when you’re pregnant," he said. "You don’t want to be smoking, you don’t want to be drinking alcohol. All of that increases the risk of SIDS."
It’s safest for babies to sleep on their backs or sides until they are 1 year old, Siegel advised.
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) shared specific guidelines on its website to ensure safe sleeping for babies and young children.
Parents and caregivers should place infants on their backs for sleep in their own dedicated sleep space — a crib, bassinet or portable play yard with a firm, flat mattress and a fitted sheet — with no other people in that same space.
Parents and caregivers should place infants on their backs for sleep in their own dedicated sleep space, experts advise. (iStock)
Infants should not be put to sleep on a couch, an armchair, a swing or a car seat.
No loose blankets, pillows, stuffed animals, plush toys, crib bumpers or other soft items should be placed in the child's sleep space. Fox new

AAR Rail Traffic March 11, 2023 and cars needed.
Please feel free to share this with anyone you know who could use and do not forget if you or anyone you know is looking to buy, sell or lease rolling stock to include power we are here to help you! We are also happy to list your railcars on our website there is no charge to list them.

Special Note: On March 8, following a second derailment in Ohio that did not involve a hazmat spill or any injuries, Norfolk Southern identified loose wheelsets on a series of recently acquired coil steel cars that present an increased risk of an out-of-gage-derailment. The Association of American Railroads immediately issued a service advisory instructing railroads to pull so-equipped cars from service, inspect them, and replace all wheelsets of a particular type. I have a copy of the AAR report if needed please let me know and I will forward.
Note: Car Supply remains in short supply if you know of or have extra cars, I would appreciate your help!

WASHINGTON, D.C. – March 1, 2023
The Association of American Railroads (AAR) today reported U.S. rail traffic for the week ending February 25, 2023, as well as volumes for February 2023.
U.S. railroads originated 905,744 carloads in February 2023, down 1.6 percent, or 15,101 carloads, from February 2022. U.S. railroads also originated 943,979 containers and trailers in February 2023, down 8.4 percent, or 86,351 units, from the same month last year. Combined U.S. carload and intermodal originations in February 2023 were 1,849,723, down 5.2 percent, or 101,452 carloads and intermodal units from February 2022.
In February 2023, eight of the 20 carload commodity categories tracked by the AAR each month saw carload gains compared with February 2022. These included: crushed stone, sand & gravel, up 8,821 carloads or 13.1 percent; petroleum & petroleum products, up 5,833 carloads or 15.8 percent; and motor vehicles & parts, up 4,389 carloads or 8.9 percent. Commodities that saw declines in February 2023 from February 2022 included: coal, down 16,648 carloads or 6.1 percent; grain, down 9,227 carloads or 9.7 percent; and chemicals, down 6,298 carloads or 4.6 percent.
“Coal, chemicals, and grain together account for more than half of all non-intermodal U.S. rail volume. When all three are down, like they were in February, it’s very hard for total carloads not to be down too,” said AAR Senior Vice President John T. Gray. “On the positive side, several commodities including crushed stone and sand, petroleum products, steel products, grain mill and food products showed very strong performances.”
Excluding coal, carloads were up 1,547 carloads, or 0.2 percent, in February 2023 from February 2022. Excluding coal and grain, carloads were up 10,774 carloads, or 2.0 percent.
Total U.S. carload traffic for the first two months of 2023 was 1,829,440 carloads, up 0.3 percent, or 4,726 carloads, from the same period last year; and 1,863,907 intermodal units, down 8.3 percent, or 167,794 containers and trailers, from last year.
Total combined U.S. traffic for the first eight weeks of 2023 was 3,693,347 carloads and intermodal units, a decrease of 4.2 percent compared to last year.
