When should you actually start planning a European river cruise for 2027?

The short answer: now, especially if you're looking at Christmas markets.

Here's what most people don't realize about river cruise inventory. These vessels carry 150-200 passengers, not 3,000+ like ocean ships. And Christmas market sailings only operate for about 6-8 weeks each year, from mid-November through December.

That's a finite number of cabins on a finite number of departures for the most popular itinerary of the year.

AmaWaterways and other premium river cruise lines typically release their schedules 18-24 months in advance. The best cabins - suites, French balconies in preferred locations, lower decks for easier access - book first. Often within weeks of release.

By the time you're 12 months out, you're not choosing what works best for your travel style. You're choosing from whatever happens to be left.

This same pattern happens with tulip season sailings in the Netherlands and Belgium each spring. Limited weeks, limited space, extremely high demand.

Booking early isn't just about securing a spot. It's about securing the right spot, at the right price point, without the stress of scrambling or compromising later.

Airports are finally making this easier for travelers, and honestly, I wish more people paid attention to it before boarding day.

Every airline has slightly different carry-on and personal item size requirements. What fits on Delta may not fit on Spirit, Frontier, or even another international carrier. That “it fit last time” strategy can become a very expensive gate-check fee surprisingly fast.

One of the simplest travel habits you can develop is checking your airline’s baggage dimensions before you leave home, especially if:
• you’re flying a budget carrier
• you purchased a new suitcase recently
• you’re trying to avoid checked bag fees
• you’re connecting between different airlines

A few minutes of preparation can save a lot of frustration at the airport.

This is also why I always tell clients that luggage shopping should involve measurements, not just aesthetics. Cute luggage is great. Luggage that actually fits the airline rules is better. ✈️

Why Waiting Limits Cabin Choice

When travelers delay a cruise decision, the assumption is often that price is the primary variable. In practice, availability is the first thing to change.

The most desirable cabins are selected early. Mid-ship locations, preferred decks, and specific categories tend to disappear long before a sailing is sold out. What remains later is often a narrower selection, not necessarily a better value.

This becomes even more noticeable on European itineraries and smaller ships, where inventory is limited from the start.

Waiting does not simply affect cost. It reshapes the options entirely.

Choosing earlier allows for intention. Waiting requires compromise.

Every year around this time, the same question starts popping up:

“Is it safe to travel to the Caribbean during hurricane season?”

Honestly, it’s a much more nuanced conversation than most headlines make it sound.

The reality is that millions of travelers vacation in the Caribbean every hurricane season without issue. Storms are usually tracked days in advance, many islands sit outside the primary storm belt, and travel insurance plus flexible planning can make a huge difference.

That doesn’t mean travelers should ignore the risks. It just means the conversation deserves more perspective than panic.

One point the article makes that I thought was especially interesting is that hurricane season can also mean lower pricing, fewer crowds, and some surprisingly beautiful weather windows between storms.

As someone who plans travel professionally, I think this is one of those topics where preparation matters far more than fear.

Curious where everyone stands on this:

Would you travel to the Caribbean during hurricane season?
Have you ever had a trip impacted by a storm?
Or do you intentionally avoid traveling this time of year altogether?

Final Booking Windows for Summer Sailings

Summer travel is no longer a distant plan. We are now in the final stretch for many of the most requested itineraries.

Mediterranean sailings are limited, particularly for preferred cabin categories and well-located ships. River cruises along the Danube and Rhine are nearing capacity for peak dates. Alaska continues to hold demand, though options remain for those who are flexible with timing or departure ports.

There are still opportunities, but they require decisiveness. The difference at this stage is not whether travel is possible, but whether the right experience is still available.

If you have been considering a summer itinerary and have not finalized it, this is the moment to take a serious look at what remains.

The Difference Between “Booked” and “Prepared”

There is a meaningful difference between having booked a reservation and being ready for the trip.

A booked client has a cabin. A prepared client has a plan.
Prepared clients understand how they are getting to the port, where they are staying if needed, and which experiences matter most once they arrive. Their excursions are secured with intention. Their documents are in order. Their time has been considered carefully, rather than left to chance.

This is often the point where a trip either comes together seamlessly or begins to feel disjointed. The cruise line provides the framework, yet the quality of the experience is shaped by the decisions made well before departure.

This is also where my role becomes essential. I guide clients through each of these decisions, ensuring that nothing important is missed and that every element supports the kind of experience they actually want to have.

Preparation is not about adding complexity. It is about removing uncertainty, so that once you step on board, your focus can remain exactly where it should be.
