If you've been here for any amount of time... you know I LOVE a good all-inclusive.
But here's the truth that I 100% believe: Neither is better. They're each for completely different trips.
All-inclusive makes sense when you need ease, predictability, and minimal decisions. Especially when you're burned out and want someone else to handle everything. Even though it's not as immersive culturally, you can still choose to go explore when and if you decide to.
A boutique hotel makes sense when you really, really want to experience the destination. When you just know you're willing to trade convenience for authenticity and immersion, and you don't mind the need to make more decisions throughout your trip.
Let's talk about the differences you can expect:
🏨 ALL-INCLUSIVE
What You Get
- All meals, drinks, and most activities included
- Minimal decisions about where to eat or what to do
- Predictable budget (you know your total cost up front)
- Have everything you need, even if you choose not to leave the property
- Easy for families, groups, and ease
The Trade Offs
- Food quality can be hit and miss
- If you choose to stay on the property, you're in a resort bubble and not experiencing much of the destination
- Can sometimes feel crowded, impersonal, and less private
🏨 BOUTIQUE HOTEL
What You Get
- Unique design and character
- Intimate, more personalized service
- Freedom to explore local restaurants and culture
- Usually a more quiet atmosphere
The Trade Offs
- The spending can add up quick when you're paying for everything a la carte
- Limited on-property amenities
- Lots more planning is needed and sometimes you have to make decisions on the fly (The decision fatigue can get real)
- Intimate properties can mean intimate public spaces (like the pool)
But wait a second... this might blow your mind, but sometimes the best move is BOTH! Start with a boutique hotel where you can explore to your heart's content, then end your trip with an all-inclusive stay to relax and decompress before coming home.
