I still can't believe I stood inside the home of Ann and Sasha Shulgin. The place where they lived and loved together, where they explored the depths of their psyche together and dove head first into a whirlpool of feelings. The kitchen was so humble and adorable, and I imagined Ann making her famous bean soup. I loved browsing around, adoring their lifetime work and collections. The trinkets everywhere were my favorite.
Here is a look inside...

I love this candid photo of Paul Daley in Sashas lab from the Psilocybe workshop last weekend. I'm still flying high from it. Paul continues to hold it down in the lab by carrying on research and teaching.

I spent a quiet year beneath the trees, raising my baby where the river runs. One whole slow year swallowed us up in a flash. Pecurliarly, my mycology career has advanced tremendously during this time, and I can't wait to spit out what's in store for 2025.
Sending peace and love to all. 🦋🫂

Life is so psilly and truly magical. Earlier this year, I visited the University of Michigans Herbarium with my family. I was so impressed and hoped to be involved with it one day. Fast forward to yesterday when I was there collecting fungal specimens from California to run DNA barcoding and sequencing with the Mycota Team. What a trip! Manifestation is so cool. Never underestimate your power, your magic. Happy Halloween ! ✨️🧡🍄

I've been working with Mycota as of late, delving into molecular mycology and learning a whole lot about DNA sequencing. The Mycota team DNA barcodes fungi of North America and has completed DNA extraction, amplification, and sequencing for over 40,000 individual specimens. With that being said, The Fall Continental Mycoblitz is here! Send in your top 10 specimens(dried) for sequencing. You may discover something new and interesting!

50th annual A.H. Smith Foray in The Hiawatha National Forest with my little family. It was Lera's first foray! She's so adventurous at heart and quite the little trooper. We were grateful to be a part of this annual event engaging with fellow mycologists during the peak of Michigan's fall mushroom season! 🍄🌛🍂🐌

🚨THE WORLDS FIRST ANALYTIC PSILOCYBIN LACTATION STUDY is in the works. After much anticipation, we're off on another passion project. As both a new mother and a scientist, I've accomplished the initial round of analytical testing on the presence and degradation of psilocybin and psilocin in breastmilk. Given the scarcity of data on this topic, our commitment to advancing this study is a top priority. We're eager to continue our research and invite willing participants to join us in contributing valuable data to the community. Your participation is instrumental in helping us gather the necessary insights for this study. Let's come together to empower each other as women, as mothers, as psilocybin space holders.

🛑 Please note that we do not condone the use of psilocybin while actively breastfeeding.

We aren't just an ordinary mushroom farm because our mushrooms have a mission. With time, Fungi Freights hopes to equip freight containers with the necessities to grow mushrooms and ship them to areas of the world affected by food scarcity. The mushrooms can be grown sustain-ably by its destinations main agricultural waste. By providing the structure, equipment and basic knowledge on mushroom cultivation, individuals can successfully grow mushrooms for their community.

Tess Burzynski
Tess Burzynski is the founder, head educator and cultivator at Fungi Freights Urban Farm and Environmental Studio. A Science degree graduate from Wayne State University, she works as an Environmental Project Manager and continues doing research with Mycoremediation in the city of Detroit.
Her love of Fungi began in her early years exploring the outdoors. She is a member of the Michigan Mushroom Hunters Club and the North American Mycological Association. Throughout her studies she has learned the impact mycelium plays in the environment and how beneficial, tenacious and magical it truly is. Through Fungi Freights, her goal is to reunite mushrooms and (wo)mankind by educating Detroit and its surrounding neighbors about the benefits mushrooms have on health, food scarcity and the environment.
