Today, we honor the people whose work has always kept Detroit moving.

From the sailors who stood the midnight watch to the tug crews, dockworkers, shipbuilders, engineers, and every skilled tradesperson along the Detroit River and Great Lakes, their grit, craftsmanship, and commitment built more than an industry they built a legacy.

As an old sailor’s toast reminds us: May the wind be at your back, the channel stay deep, and the lighthouse always guide you home.

This Labor Day, we remember those who came before us, thank those carrying the work forward today, and recognize that the strength of our maritime community has always come from the people willing to answer the next watch.

Fair winds, safe harbor, and Happy Labor Day.
