There are few wildlife encounters that stay with people quite like coming face to face with mountain gorillas in Rwanda.
Set on the edge of Volcanoes National Park, Bisate Reserve combines one of Africa’s most extraordinary wildlife experiences with beautifully designed accommodation and a strong focus on conservation and reforestation.
Days here are centred around gorilla trekking, heading into the forest with expert trackers to spend time with one of the habituated gorilla families that call this region home. No two treks are ever quite the same, and that sense of anticipation before you first see them never really leaves you.
Back at Bisate, the atmosphere feels calm and deeply connected to the landscape, with dramatic volcanic views, exceptional guiding, and a real sense of place throughout the lodge.
For those wanting to experience another side of Rwanda, combining gorilla trekking with Akagera National Park works beautifully. At Magashi Camp, set beside Lake Rwanyakazinga in the remote north of the park, the focus shifts to classic safari experiences, game drives, boat safaris and evenings around the fire overlooking the water. It is a wonderful contrast to the forests and volcanoes of Rwanda’s north.
Together, Bisate and Magashi create an incredibly varied journey through Rwanda, combining gorilla trekking, big game safari and some of the most thoughtful conservation-led lodges in Africa. We also regularly arrange gorilla trekking itineraries in neighbouring Uganda, depending on the style of experience clients are looking for.
