Jimmy Choo and Valentino, for a fraction of what you’d pay in the US.

Somehow the perfect way to close out this Vienna travel series.

Designer Outlet Parndorf, about 30 minutes outside Vienna,

easy shuttle from near the State Opera.

160+ stores, Prada, Gucci, Burberry, Versace, real outlet prices.

A quick look turns into an afternoon fast. I end up with shoes from Valentino and Jimmy Choo and a purse from Furla.

PRO TIP: there’s a duty-free tax refund office onsite,

stop there before heading back to Vienna

for double savings, once at the register and again on your way out.

A sad true love story. He spent the rest of his life waiting

for his fiancée who never came home.

That’s the story behind one of Bratislava’s most photographed statues,

a man in a top hat and tailcoat, forever mid-bow,

greeting ladies with “I kiss your hand.”

His name was Ignác Lamár, known locally as Schöne Náci,

Handsome Ignatius, and he was real.

His fiancée was deported to a N**i concentration camp during World War II

and never came home, and he spent the rest of his life wandering the same streets,

dressed to the nines, greeting strangers,

surviving on kindness from local cafés until he died largely forgotten.

Bratislava gave him a statue so the story would live on.

We took a day trip from Vienna into a country barely older than some of us.

Slovakia spent centuries under Hungarian and Habsburg rule,

then decades under communism,

before finally winning real independence on January 1, 1993.

Nearby stands a lighter counterpart, a bronze man peeking out of a manhole,

nicknamed “the watcher,” installed the same year to give the city a fresh identity.

PRO TIP: Ignác’s statue stands right in front of Café Mayer,

the confectionery he used to sit and wait frequently.

It’s a popular photo stop, so the café gets busy and service can be slow.

It is not a quick in and out.

Stock exchange to coffeehouse.

That’s the story of this room.

Café Central was built in 1876

inside what used to be Vienna’s actual stock exchange,

before it became one of the most iconic things to experience in Vienna, Austria.

Walking in, the space doesn’t feel like a café,

ceilings arching up like a cathedral,

columns that feel borrowed from somewhere grander.

For over a century this was where Vienna’s writers, thinkers,

and revolutionaries actually spent their days,

Freud had a regular table, Trotsky reportedly worked out ideas at his,

and there’s a life-size statue of the poet Peter Altenberg still seated at his own.

That “sit for hours over one coffee” culture isn’t an accident.

It’s literally why UNESCO named Viennese coffeehouse culture

an Intangible Cultural Heritage back in 2011,

this is a protected way of life, not just a pretty room.

Café Central closed in March 2026 for a major renovation and is expected to reopen fall 2026.

In the meantime, a pop-up called Decentral has opened nearby,

keeping the tradition alive in the interim.

Mozart performed in this exact room in 1786.

Guests still sit in it every night.

That’s the Schönbrunn Orangery,

home to the nightly Schönbrunn Palace Orchestra concert,

one of the most underrated things to do in Vienna, Austria.

Built around 1754, it’s actually the largest Baroque orangery in Europe after Versailles,

originally constructed as a heated greenhouse to protect citrus trees through Vienna’s winters,

not a concert hall at all.

Somewhere along the way, it became a stage for Mozart and Salieri,

and that tradition has never stopped.

Inside, there are four seating categories, VIP, A, B, and C.

Every seat sits at the same level, no tiers, just the stage raised in front of the room.

Red velvet seating fills the space, chandeliers overhead,

and once the music starts,

the Baroque ceiling comes alive with colorful light projections washing across the architecture.

The program moves through instrumental symphonies,

opera duets with live vocal soloists, and traditional ballet.

it’s first come, first served once doors open,

—better known as Sisi

—and why Hofburg Palace is one of Vienna’s most fascinating experiences.

Sisi became Empress at only 16 years old.

1,441 rooms. Only 45 are open for people to see.

That’s Schönbrunn Palace,

one of the best things to do in Vienna, Austria,

and it exists because of one woman.

Empress Maria Theresa, the only woman to ever rule the Habsburg empire,

took the throne at 23 and ruled for 40 years

while raising 16 children, one of whom became Marie Antoinette. Starting in 1743,

she transformed Schönbrunn from a plain hunting lodge into

the golden Rococo palace it’s known as today.

One detail that stays with us:

a six year old Mozart once performed for her in the Hall of Mirrors,

the same room where gold stretches floor to ceiling

and the history feels close enough to touch.

Insider tip for the best time to visit Schönbrunn Palace:

skip the main gate everyone lines up at and go in through the Western Park Gate instead.

Right at 8:30 opening or after 3 PM,

Tuesday through Thursday, is when the palace feels like it’s yours.
