In one month we will join our friends at Portland Public Library for a panel discussion: “From Treaties to Today: Wabanaki Tribal Sovereignty in Maine” moderated by Dr. Darren Ranco, Chair of Native American Programs at the University of Maine, and citizen of the Penobscot Nation.

We’re honored to hear from Hon. Donna Loring (Penobscot Nation), Ambassador Osihkiyol Crofton-Macdonald (Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians), Maulian Bryant (Penobscot Nation), and Sage Phillips (Penobscot Nation).

We hope to see you on July 18th for a meaningful discussion about the past, present, and future of sovereignty for the Wabanaki Nations. This event will be live-streamed on the Wabanaki Alliance page.

Our work is rooted in community across our homelands now called Maine and we feel that community far and wide. As we approach a new dawn we hope to celebrate our presence as Wabanaki people with our friends, partners, tribal citizens, allies, and more. We hope to see you there! More details to come.

The primary election in our homelands now called Maine is almost here and we’re reminding folks that they’re casting their vote on Wabanaki land.

Did you know that Indigenous people did not have the right to vote in federal elections in the United States until 1924? Then, 31 years later Lucy Nicolar Poolaw (pictured) was the first Wabanaki citizen to vote in a federal election while living on a reservation.

Wabanaki citizens were denied the right to vote in Maine State elections until 1967, just under 60 years ago.

As we head into the primary election, we remember that our vote is sacred, our voices are powerful, and our presence as Wabanaki people is profound. We’re voting on Wabanaki homelands and so are you!
